Tucked away in the woodsy corner of a public park located within the once-gilded boundaries of a manufacturing city lies one of America's oldest ballparks—the only one in existence where historic sports figures Babe Ruth and Vince Lombardi have played. Muzzy Field: Tales From a Forgotten Ballpark, by journalist Douglas Malan chronicles all the Hall of Fame athletes and coaches who have played on the field since its creation in 1912, bringing to life the fascinating stories that created a legacy.

Bloomington, IN, February 25, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Journalist Recounts Fascinating History of One of America's Oldest Ballparks; His Book Captures Historic Figures and Teams Who Played at Muzzy Field

Muzzy Field: Tales From a Forgotten Ballpark (published by iUniverse) by journalist Douglas S. Malan chronicles, for the first time, all of the historic athletes and coaches who have played at the field since its inception in 1912.

One of America's oldest ballparks, Muzzy Field began as a charitable land donation with the financial backing of the sports-minded management at New Departure Manufacturing. It became home to one of the area’s strongest semiprofessional baseball teams and welcomed some of the greatest athletes who played the game, including more than three dozen current Hall of Famers in various sports. Muzzy Field is now the only field still in use where both Babe Ruth and Vince Lombardi played.

After moving to Bristol, Conn., home of Muzzy Field, and hearing in passing about Babe Ruth's home run at the field in 1919, Malan read the resulting game accounts, which in turn led to uncovering many interesting stories of athletes and games played at the ballpark.

"The obvious soon dawned on me," states Malan. "Someone had to retell these stories and spread them to the people who recognize the value of such municipal ballparks rich in history and to the athletes who compete on that field without fully recognizing the magnitude of doing so."

After four years of thorough research, Malan now tells the stories of Ruth and the 1919 Red Sox, the arrival of the 1926 defending world champion Pittsburgh Pirates, who brought five future Hall of Famers to Bristol and lost to New Departure and many other notable baseball and football teams and players who left their mark on Muzzy Field.
