Multi-Million Dollar Expansion Complete at North Tampa Eye Surgery Center

Tampa, FL, March 14, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Patients finally have the chance to view surgery live before undergoing it themselves. Cataract, bladeless LASIK, glaucoma, and cosmetic procedures are now being performed in Newsom Eye’s surgical center, Tampa Surgery Center. Observation windows enabling live viewing of surgery along with televisions to see from the microscopic perspective are two of the many state-of-the-art features at Tampa Surgery Center.

Construction is complete on the 4,600-square-foot eye surgery center located in Carrollwood at 13904 North Dale Mabry Highway. The center was part of the $7.5 million expansion of Newsom Eye’s existing medical facility, and will enable them to give even more patients their own NEWsom Eyes A previous patient branded Dr. Newsom’s surgical results and ability when she said, “I don’t tell people I have New Eyes I tell them I have ‘NEWsom Eyes.’” Since then, the term NEWsom Eyes has been used by patients to describe their life-changing experiences at Newsom Eye.

“It eases our patient’s minds to know they can go downstairs and watch the procedure being performed before experiencing it themselves,” says Dr. T. Hunter Newsom, founder and medical director of Newsom Eye. “They already know that the procedures are fast and painless, but seeing LASIK or cataract surgery live really helps them understand the process and how comfortable they will be throughout it. We have cameras connected to my microscope, so you can see every step of the procedure from my point of view. Of course, patients may opt-out of letting outside viewers watch their surgery. We simply flip the switch on our observation window to make the waiting room unable to see into the OR.”

Tampa Surgery Center is also the new location for LASIK surgery at Newsom Eye. LASIK can be performed right in a doctor’s clinical office; it is not required to be conducted in the sterile environment of an operating room. However, Dr. Newsom decided to establish the new standard in LASIK by performing these procedures in Tampa Surgery Center, as an extra precaution to protect his patients.

The facility includes several FDA research-ready operating rooms that were designed to comply with the strict standards required for FDA research studies. “Despite the economy, we’ve still been able to grow and add to our practice. We were able to bring some of the newest FDA research to the Tampa Bay area. We believe this size of investment was necessary to provide a facility capable of the research and exceptional patient care that has brought patients from across the country seeking our surgical expertise. Located only eight miles north of Tampa International Airport, this expanded facility provides more services than our other locations and allows easier access for patients traveling long distances.”

Newsom expanded his practice into Tampa three years ago. Newsom Eye has offices and a research-based surgical center in Sebring and Avon Park, Fla. Newsom graduated from the University of Florida with Honors in Research and was the first surgeon in the world to implant the Aphakic Artisan Intraocular Lens in a patient with megalocornea. He was recognized by the American College of Eye Surgeons for “Surgical Excellence” and is a Lifetime Visiting Professor at the top-ranked University of Iowa.
