Two Local Hospitals Selected for International Healthcare Convention Tours

Specialized healthcare architects, engineers, contractors and experts will tour some of San Diego’s state-of-the-art facilities on March 14

San Diego, CA, March 14, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Two local hospitals currently being built by DPR Construction have been selected for facility tours for the 2010 International Summit and Exhibition on Health Facility Planning, Design and Construction (PDC 2010). The PDC 2010, hosted by the American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE) of the American Hospital Association (AHA) and the American Institute of Architects (AIA), will be held at the San Diego Convention Center from March 14-17, 2010.

Specialized healthcare architects, engineers, contractors and experts will tour some of San Diego’s state-of-the-art facilities on March 14 including the Sulpizio Family Cardiovascular Center at UCSD’s Thorton Hospital and Palomar Medical Center West, one of the state’s largest projects currently under construction in Escondido.

“We’re honored to be part of this important conference that explores exciting new design concepts and construction best practices for healthcare buildings around the world,” said Jay Leopold, regional manager of DPR Construction San Diego. “These two projects really demonstrate our unique ability to deliver superior and inspiring results because of our emphasis on relationships and communication.”

Tour participants will be guided by DPR representatives through the four-story Sulpizio Family Cardiovascular Center designed by RTKL Architects. Guests will visit the facility’s non-invasive cardiology, out-patient clinics, cardiovascular catheterization laboratories, cardiac surgery rooms, intensive care unit and two patient care floors. The project team will also share project specific challenges and how they were resolved using a high performance team delivery approach.

“As unexpected and highly complex issues arose while building the Sulpizio Family Cardiovascular Center, our foundation of trust allowed our team to find timely and non-traditional solutions to problems that could have led to delays of many months,” said DPR Project Manager Carlos Crabtree overseeing the Sulpizio Family Cardiovascular Center. “Because of our creative strategies, this project is ahead of schedule and under budget.”

When completed, the new Cardiovascular Center will feature an expanded emergency department, which includes 18 treatment rooms, an expanded imaging area and recovery rooms (PACU) dedicated to heart services. Construction began in May 2008 and is expected to be completed by Dec. 2010 with a public opening spring 2011.

Guests will also have the chance to see first-hand the 739,000 square-foot Palomar Medical Center West. Once completed, the hospital will accommodate approximately 360 hospital beds and feature 12 operating rooms and a trauma center, as well as a 60,000 square-foot central plant. To provide patients a healing environment while at the hospital, special design elements were incorporated including a 2.5 acre living roof and public terrace, garden spaces on every level of the 11-story tower and roof terrace for outdoor dining activities.

“We are tremendously proud to be part of this highly technical, forward-thinking project that will save people’s lives in the future,” said DPR Project Manager Brian Gracz who is currently based at the hospital. “We believe that the Palomar Medical Center West will truly be the hospital of the future because of its commitment to the environment, progressive designs and cutting-edge technology.”

Convention participates will take a tour of the Palomar Medical West’s patient floor, view an in progress patient room mock-up, and see a portion of the Diagnostic and Treatment wing that is currently under construction.

Owned by Palomar Pomerado Health and designed by CO Architects, the expected 38 month project is slated for a 2012 opening.
