Brave New Voices 13 Announced : Largest Ongoing Spoken World Event in the World to be Held July 19th to 24th in Los Angeles, CA

San Francisco, CA, March 24, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Youth Speaks Inc. today announced that the 13th Annual Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Slam Festival will be held in Los Angeles July 19th – 24th in venues around the city, including the Saban Theater, Club Nokia and LATC. Sponsors for this year’s event include the Ford Foundation, Nathan Cummings Foundation, Redford Center, US Green Building Council and American Airlines. The festival will be filmed by HBO for a 90-minute special, and will also feature the Brave New Leaders Conference, which will focus on building the movement of the spoken word.

“We truly believe that this is going to be the best festival that we’ve had in all of our years in existence,” said James Kass, founder and executive director of Youth Speaks Inc. “The festival brings together 750 participants from over 50 international communities and it just keeps growing, with past poets going on to some amazing things like the recent White House Poetry Slam.”

Teen Poetry Slams are already taking place across the country to select the local poets who will then go on to Brave New Voices in Los Angeles, representing their hometowns. Participants come from most major cities in the United States, as well as Native American reservations, smaller rural areas and college towns. Registration is open to new teams until April 15th, and more information can be found at www.bravenewvoices.org.

Now in its 14th year, Brave New Voices will continue to create a forum and community among an ever-growing number of youth who are returning to literature and reinvesting in education through the power of the spoken word. Building bridges across radically diverse ethnic, racial and socio-economic lines, Brave New Voices is for a generation of young people speaking for themselves; a generation documenting their days in journals, reciting struggles and successes on open microphones, teenagers transcending traditional stereotypes by speaking their truths and listening to the truths of others. As many as 1,000 youth from varied parts of the United States and beyond will take part in this one-of-a-kind event.
