Elvis Presley Contract to Purchase Graceland to be Sold at Auction April 25

Gary Sohmers of Wex Rex Collectibles brings Elvis Presley original documents to auction including the purchase and sale agreements for Graceland, 1034 Audubon Dr. and the Circle G Ranch, plus more great historic memorabilia.

Oceanside, NY, March 31, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Rock and Roll Holy Grails are few and far between. Some musical instruments, clothing and documents are treasured for their unique importance to the genre. Most remain with the family, or in a Museum, with the most historically important objects often never coming up for sale.

While at a public appraisal event at the Memphis Area Home Builders Association Home Show in March 2010, Gary Sohmers, appraiser, radio talk show host and a popular character who appears as an appraiser in Memorabilia on the PBS TV program “Antiques Roadshow” handled over 700 people who came in with artifacts, autographs and stories about Elvis Presley along with other collectibles. Event Promoter Joe Callaway made the front page of the Memphis Commercial Appeal Newspaper with his collection of unpublished photographs of Elvis on “Dance Party” TV show filmed in Memphis with host Wink Martindale in 1956 valued at $30,000.

That article was seen by a gentleman who had worked in a law firm in Memphis that handled Real Estate who had retrieved a file folder from the trash at his firm back in 1987 when they purged their old files. The file was marked “Elvis Presley” and the owner of the law firm gave him permission to take the folder and documents. When he brought those documents in to get the opinion of the appraiser just for curiosity, he was astounded to learn that he was in possession of what many would consider a Holy Grail of Elvis collecting.

The man had the original documents the law firm had used when Elvis, along with his father Vernon and mother Gladys, bought their first home in Memphis at 1034 Audobon Rd. It is signed by all 3 and documents the price paid and terms. Yes, that may sound exciting but maybe only to a real Elvis fan, so is that the Grail. No, he also happened to have the Purchase & Sale Agreement, along with the Settlement Sheet for GRACELAND. To purchase Graceland, Elvis gave the current owner Ruth Brown Moore the Property on Audobon Rd. The terms and conditions are detailed and it is signed by Elvis, Vernon and Gladys Presley. He also had the documents for Elvis’ purchase of the Circle G Ranch, then known as Twinkletown Farms, just south of Memphis in Mississippi where Elvis and Priscilla honeymooned.

After relaying reasonable expectations on the insurance company replacement cost value of such a historically important set of documents about a building on the National Historic Register, Gary was asked by the man how he would go about possibly selling the documents.

Gary chose Philip Weiss Auctions of Oceanside New York to handle the sale of the important documents in a Pop Culture auction coming up on April 25, 2010. Philip Weiss Auctions recently sold the marriage certificate for the union of Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley for $80,000, and regularly handles Elvis memorabilia.
