New Telepresence Infrastructure Widens Support for Multimedia Data Collaboration

BrightCom releases Visual Collaboration System 2.6 with new media framework to enhance support for a wider range of business data enabling businesses to accomplish more in the telepresence and video conferencing meetings.

Huntington Beach, CA, April 01, 2010 --(PR.com)-- BrightCom™, the performance leader in integrated telepresence and video conferencing, announced today the release of the Visual Collaboration System (VCS) 2.6, BrightCom’s telepresence and video conferencing infrastructure that integrates video, audio and data conferencing in one server appliance. VCS 2.6 is built upon a new, paradigm-shifting foundation that will open up more opportunities for businesses to apply telepresence and video conferencing to their everyday communication and collaboration activities.

BrightCom’s VCS is a processor based, software driven, conferencing infrastructure that combines multiple functionalities of telepresence meeting administration, scheduling, NAT/firewall traversal and security with a complete set of web conferencing features in a single server. Participants using BrightCom or SIP enabled telepresence suites, video conferencing rooms, video conferencing mobile carts, desktop video conferencing, or web cameras on desktops, laptops or other mobile devices from remote locations connecting over the Internet can connect to the VCS to conduct scheduled or spontaneous meetings. While VCS allows for 16 displays of participant’s video, an unlimited number of participants can be in a meeting.

According to Bob McCandless, CEO of BrightCom, “BrightCom’s innovation is different than our competitors, but we feel we are on the right path. To help understand our uniqueness in the market, we use the metaphor of the change in the mobile phone market. In the past few years you can clearly see the difference between the firmware based cell phones and the processor based smart phones. Our competitors offer technology that is similar to yesterday's firmware based cell phones. BrightCom’s processor based technology is flexible, and can grow and change as our customers and R&D teams have new ideas for its enhancement.”

BrightCom’s latest version of the VCS, VCS 2.6, takes data collaboration to a new level with enhanced support for multimedia files. Built on top of a new media framework, VCS now supports a wider variety of movie and media file formats including MPG, AVI, MP4, WMV, and MOV. Any participant in a meeting can view these types of video clips without having media players or installing a specific media player on their desktop or laptop computer. Additionally, VCS 2.6 has extended its support for Microsoft® Office files and Adobe Acrobat® PDFs.

As a server/client environment, VCS enables participants to transfer data in its native format, requiring lower utilization of bandwidth. Prerecorded media files are transferred in their native formats using the same process as all other data, allowing the presenter of the file to pause, rewind or fast forward.

Unlike telepresence and video conferencing systems with H.239 data sharing technology, the VCS 2.6 allows participants to pass control of the meeting to other participants, collaboratively markup data, work together with whiteboards, instant message other participants or the group, share their screens or web browsers, create and use polls for audience response and remote control another participant’s desktop. The new architecture also provides several other features enhancing the conference room experience for Lumina Telepresence and ClearView Video Conferencing solutions. The VCS now supports web camera integration for remote desktop and laptop users as well as the ClearView Desktop Video Conferencing solution, released in February. This release also features cross platform support for Macintosh OSX, Windows PC and Linux operating systems. Next generation codec support is also available providing enhanced speed, performance and scalability for all Lumina Telepresence and ClearView Video Conferencing codecs.
