KineticaRT Designs a System to Monitor the Well-Being of Elderly People and Thus Allow People to Live in Their Own Homes for Longer and Reduce the Cost of Elderly Care

TSB-funded feasibility study will allow KineticaRT to develop a system to monitor the well-being of elderly people via minimally intrusive, low-cost sensors.

Exeter, United Kingdom, April 15, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Following the successful delivery of a TSB-funded feasibility study, Simon Hedges, director of Exeter-based KineticaRT, presented a project summary to the TSB Collaboration Nation audience in London on 31 March. The elevator pitch highlighted the need to allow more elderly people to live independently, the benefits of the proposed low-cost minimally intrusive Activity of Daily Life monitor and KineticaRT’s need for partners and funding to take the project forward.

KineticaRT aims to develop a system to monitor the well-being of elderly people via minimally intrusive, low-cost sensors. This will allow people to live in their own homes for longer and will reduce the cost of elderly care. The number of elderly people living alone is increasing, as is the cost of their care. Nowadays, fewer people informally check the well-being of those living independently – in many cases milkmen and postmen are no longer regular callers and families don’t live in the neighbourhood.

The system continuously monitors total electricity and water use and detects changes in a person’s “Activities of Daily Life”. Carers can remotely check an elderly person’s well-being by viewing their activity record via the internet. Unlike current monitoring systems, there is no need to fit sensors in all the rooms the person normally occupies; so the system is less intrusive and also less likely to compromise self-esteem.

To take the project forward KineticaRT will run field trials in conjunction with a care provider and, with the help of an academic partner, will optimise the presentation of information to carers so they can check the person’s well-being. KineticaRT seeks suitable partners and funding for the project.
