Copper County Humane Society Wins The Animal Rescue Site’s First Shelter+ Challenge in 2010

Seattle, WA, April 23, 2010 --(PR.com)-- The Copper County Humane Society is the Grand Prize winner of The Animal Rescue Site's first $100,000 Shelter+ Challenge of 2010 with Petfinder.com. This Humane Society located in Houghton, Michigan, will receive a $10,000 grant to help care for animals. Another 84 grants ranging from $1,000 to $3,000 will go to organizations throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Costa Rica. In all, eighty-five grants totaling $100,000 were awarded to rescue groups and shelters in this Challenge.

The first $100,000 Shelter+ Challenge of 2010 ran from January 18 to April 18. Over the course of thirteen weeks, more than 5.2 million votes were cast at The Animal Rescue Site for rescue groups of all sizes currently active in the Petfinder.com Network. The twenty-six weekly winners in the Challenge ranged from small town shelters like Denison City Pound of Iowa (which also received an honorable mention in this Challenge) to largely volunteer rescue groups, including one devoted to pot-bellied pigs.

“This program sponsored by The Animal Rescue Site has been a wonderful opportunity for Petfinder.com members,” said Liz Neuschatz, director of the Petfinder.com Foundation. “The winners have something to really celebrate, but even those who don’t win have benefited from their communities coming together to act on behalf of homeless pets.”

The Animal Rescue Site will hold two more $100,000 Shelter+ Challenges in 2010: the next Challenge begins on May 17. Active members of the Petfinder.com Network of shelters and animal rescue organizations are eligible to win grants ranging from $1,000 to $10,000. The Animal Rescue Site has committed a total of $300,000 to the three Challenges.

A special additional grant of $10,000 has been added for the organization that receives the most votes over the course of the entire year.

“We have been impressed by the groups who keep coming back and trying harder. We have seen so many small, rural, largely volunteer organizations use these campaigns to create greater awareness about their work and the good that they do in their community,” said Tim Kunin, CEO of The Animal Rescue Site.

Members of Petfinder.com Network can participate in the Shelter+ Challenges absolutely free, helping animal rescue organizations through North America receive extra funding.
