New Community Resource: Private Family Therapy Practice Specializes in Trauma

Kansas City, KS, May 10, 2010 --(PR.com)-- John Stump, LMFT, Ian Newlin, LMFT, and Amanda Peterman, LMFT announces the opening of Child and Adolescent Trauma Services, LLP. The family practice specializes in therapy and counseling services for children, adolescents, and families who are suffering from trauma or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Children and teens suffering from a traumatic event may exhibit extreme behaviors and symptoms such as: Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Conduct Disorder, Cutting or Self-Harm, Depression, Eating Disorders, Attention Deficit Disorder, Anxiety/Adjustment Disorder and Alcohol and/or Drug Use.

It is estimated that each year over five million children experience some form of traumatic event such as domestic violence, physical violence, crime victim, natural disasters, and school violence/bullying. It is also estimated that each night over two-thousand youth who are held in U.S. juvenile detention centers are awaiting mental health treatment. Of those youth being held in detention centers, one out of every five suffer from a serious mental illness and many of those youth have been through some form of traumatic event.

Many experts agree that the vast majority of mental health problems are caused by trauma that has not been effectively worked through. Without treatment, symptoms of the trauma and full-blown post-traumatic stress syndrome can last indefinitely.

John, Ian, and Amanda hold Master's Degrees from Friends University in Marriage and Family Therapy and are licensed as Marriage and Family Therapists. John and Ian have experience in working with at-risk youth who have been involved in the juvenile criminal justice system and both have worked as therapists in a local juvenile detention center. Amanda has experience in community mental health working with children, adolescents and their families in all areas and concerns of mental health. The new office is conveniently located across from the Main Public Library in downtown Kansas City, Kansas. Appointments can be made by calling 913.735.4393. An initial interview is offered to help clients determine their needs and the best possible resources and therapy to help them.
