Brightcom Sponsored USC Research Surveys Teleconferencing Adoption via Business Travel and Employee Utilization

USC Research conducts survey sponsored by BrightCom to understand corporate adoption of telepresence and video conferencing for business travel and individual perceptions of technology utilization.

Huntington Beach, CA, May 12, 2010 --(PR.com)-- BrightCom, the performance leader in integrated telepresence and video conferencing solutions announced their sponsorship of a recent University of Southern California Research study conducted to understand how telepresence and video conferencing solutions are adopted by businesses as a substitute for meeting related travel. The survey attempts to understand how the technology is perceived and/or adopted by individuals within a company according to their utilization of the technology and the rate of travel on a local and global level. To participate in this survey, please click here.

According to Mohja Rhoads, doctoral student in the USC School of Policy Planning and Development and lead researcher for this study, “Teleconferencing technology has the potential to replace meeting related travel as meeting participants can interact virtually rather than through co-location. In order to understand how the technology can substitute for meeting related travel, we must better understand how the technology is adopted by individuals.”

The first part of the survey is dedicated to assessing how individuals travel for meetings, how they use teleconferencing technologies for virtual meetings and how these both relate to distance and travel budgets. While this portion of the survey will demonstrate how often workers both travel and use teleconferencing technologies in general, it will also show if there are similar patterns in these behaviors.

The second portion of the survey is focused on how perceptions and facilitating variables of technology affect the use of teleconferencing technology. This portion tries to assess users’ attitudes, self-efficacy, anxieties, performance expectancy, effort expectancy, facilitating conditions, experience, social influence, perceived control and voluntariness and how these variables affect use or future use of the technology.

“One of the most interesting aspects of conducting the survey so far is working with BrightCom via their Visual Collaboration System to work together on their sponsorship,” continued Ms. Rhoads. “The project has allowed me to experience teleconferencing on a consistent basis and to understand firsthand how this technology can be an alternative to traveling to meet with BrightCom's team 1 to 2 hours away from the USC facilities. I look forward to a wide participation for this survey so that I may fully understand how businesses and individuals are approaching this technology.”

Ms. Rhoads is cooperatively conducting this survey with the USC Annenberg School of Communication and Journalism.

“We are very excited to be working with the University of Southern California to aid them with their current research,” stated Bob McCandless, CEO of BrightCom. “It is very important that telepresence and video conferencing vendors maintain a close relationship with educational institutions in order to increase our knowledge of those areas, such as people's perceptions of teleconferencing in relation to personal interaction, which can at times be overlooked with larger benefit propositions or technology trends. It is this type of knowledge that will drive future innovation for this industry.”

In appreciation for participation, USC and BrightCom are sponsoring a free raffle for a $200 American Express gift card. The drawing will take place directly after the closing of the survey.
