Adelphi University to Host Summer Exhibition of Artwork by Jack Dowd ’60

Garden City, NY, May 14, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Adelphi University is pleased to host “In America,” an exhibition of artwork by alumnus Jack Dowd ’60. His life-size resin sculpture, “Earth Angel,” will be on display at Adelphi’s Ruth S. Harley University Center Gallery, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY, to be included in a summer-long exhibit from Friday, June 4 to Tuesday, August 11. A free reception will take place on Monday, June 7, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.

As an artist specializing in social realism, Mr. Dowd says that he is influenced by the early American painters of the Ashcan School, an early twentieth-century artistic movement centered on realism.

“I capture the realities of today’s urban American life; its comedy and tragedy, heart and soul…creating a human drama or visual novel,” he said.

Mr. Dowd’s art has been shown in galleries and museums across the United States. His solo exhibitions in Florida have been at the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota – which drew 40,000 visitors, the Jacksonville Museum of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Tallahassee. His work has also been featured at the West Bend Art Museum in Indiana and the Tribute Museum in New York City, among numerous others.

Mr. Dowd is considered one of the most significant artists of the 21st century and has been recognized by Who’s Who in American Art. His tribute to Andy Warhol, “Happy Birthday Andy,” has been on view at Adelphi as part of the Outdoor Sculpture Biennial, and will remain on display through mid-August.

The Ruth S. Harley University Center Gallery is open Sunday through Saturday, from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. For more information about this and other upcoming art exhibitions, please visit http://www.adelphi.edu/artmuseum/exhibitions/.
