SUNY Board of Trustees Approves Invictus Preparatory Charter School

Brooklyn, NY, May 15, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Invictus Preparatory Charter School, a free public charter school serving students in East New York, Brooklyn from 5th through 12th grade, was approved by the New York State Board of Regents on May 11th 2010. Invictus Prep will open its doors to 90 5th grade students on August 22, 2011.

Invictus Prep’s mission is simple: to provide every single student that walks through its doors with the academic and ethical foundation to succeed at four-year colleges and universities. It will meet the demands of this mission through high academic expectations for every student, a structured and safe academic environment, an intense focus on literacy development, and a character education program.

“As a former resident of public housing, I deeply understand the pivotal role that a high-quality education can play in the life of an at-risk student,” says Lead Founder and Executive Director Cliff Thomas. A lifelong resident of Brooklyn, NY and an alumnus of Prep for Prep and Harvard University, Mr. Thomas is adamant that all students attending Invictus will receive a strong academic foundation: “We have absolutely no doubt that we can prepare every one of our students for successful entry into and graduation from college.”

The Chairman of Invictus Prep’s Board of Trustees, Charles Guerrero, added, “This is certainly a great milestone and honor for the Invictus Prep team; however, we know that the real work and challenges lie ahead of us.” Also a New York City native, Mr. Guerrero and the Invictus Prep Board of Trustees are singularly focused on the effective governance of the school. “I am honored to be working with such a talented and experienced team of people that is dedicated, with the help and support of this great community, to creating a school that will provide a high quality educational option for the students and families of East New York.”

Invictus Prep is incredibly grateful for the support it has received from the community and outside organizations. The Community Coalition of East New York, Groundwork, Inc., Prep for Prep, and many others have all contributed to Invictus Prep’s successful chartering process, and will continue to work with the school as it serves East New York in the years to come. Cliff Thomas has had the national support of the Building Excellent Schools Fellowship, a national charter school creation program that trains and supports its Fellows to design, found, and lead a charter school of uncompromising excellence.

Invictus Prep is currently accepting students for its inaugural 5th grade class, which will begin school on August 22nd 2011. Families seeking information about enrollment and those who wish to otherwise to support the school should contact Cliff Thomas at 718.501.7253 or cthomas@buildingexcellentschools.org
