Figure 8 Barefoot Series Pros to Wear Tropical Seas' Reef Safe Biodegradable Sunscreen

Reef Safe SunCareĀ® will protect skiers and lakes during 2010 Figure 8 Barefoot tournament series.

La Porte, IN, May 24, 2010 --(PR.com)-- When the Figure 8 Barefoot Series kicks off its inaugural season here next month, the sport’s top skiers will be shielded from the sun by the world’s first truly biodegradable sunscreen. And in the process, the lakes hosting the tournament will be protected from the toxic chemicals common in other sunscreen products.

“Who needs great sunscreen that stays on their skin more than professional skiers?” said Chris McWatters, founder of the Figure 8 Barefoot Series. “Even better, we want to do our part to keep our lakes clean, so we believe Reef Safe is a perfect fit for our events.”

Reef Safe SunCare by Beach Buff® (www.reefsafesuncare.com) was named the official suncare of the Figure 8 series, thanks to a chance encounter McWatters had with the product while in St. John, Virgin Islands, in April.

“I ran out of my other sunscreen and noticed Beach Buff on the shelf at the store,” recounted McWatters. “When I saw the biodegradable label, I had to give it a try. Then I fell in love with it, because it stayed on my skin so well, it wasn’t greasy, it kept my skin from burning and, of course, I liked the fact that it would keep the lakes, reefs, plants and sea life safe.”

McWatters later contacted Dan Knorr, CEO and President of Tropical Seas (www.tropicalseas.com), which introduced the Reef Safe SunCare line in 2009, and asked if he would like to expose his products to the barefoot series competitors and fans.

“I was thrilled to hear about Chris’ experience with Reef Safe, so it was easy to take the next step to become a sponsor of the Figure 8 series,” said Knorr. “We believe every skier should care about what they’re leaving behind when they’re in the water, and that our biodegradable product should be their sunscreen of choice.”

The inaugural Figure 8 Barefoot Series features four tournaments that are expected to draw the top professionals from around the globe, including world champions David Small and Keith St. Onge. Skiers will compete side-by-side in a double-elimination format, earning points for victories in each round. The top three finishers split the entry fees from each individual event, and top finishers for the entire series earn cash and other prizes generated from sponsorships, merchandise sales and other tournament revenues.

The series schedule is as follows:

June 12-13 La Porte, IN
July 24-25 Lake St. Louis, MO
August 28 Madison, WI
October 16 Winter Haven, FL

The second series stop will coincide with the annual Glen Mueller Figure 8 Tournament hosted by the Lake St. Louis Ski Team. In addition, an attempt will be made to set the world record for most people on floats at one location (currently standing at over 700).

The Madison event will be held in conjunction with the annual Clean Lakes Festival, which is another natural platform for the Reef Safe line.

“We love the fact that Reef Safe will be tied into the Clean Lakes Festival, since that’s what we’re all about,” said Knorr. “Because our products have been scientifically proven to biodegrade in both salt and freshwater, they’re an ideal fit for any event that promotes environmental sustainability.”

In addition to providing Reef Safe to the professional competitors, fans attending the Figure 8 Barefoot Series will have an opportunity to purchase and experience the products at Reef Safe booths set up along the lake shore. Reef Safe’s logo will be prominently incorporated into all t-shirts, posters and other marketing materials created by the series.

About Reef Safe SunCare
Reef Safe SunCare by Beach Buff, manufactured and distributed by Ormond Beach, Fla-based Tropical Seas, Inc., addresses well-documented concerns about the damage done to coral reefs and marine life by the 4,000 to 6,000 metric tons of toxic sunscreens estimated to wash off swimmers into the oceans every year. By some estimates, this has led to sunscreen-induced bleaching of up to 10 percent of the world’s coral reefs. The Reef Safe sunscreens were subjected to a comprehensive series of independent laboratory tests to support and authenticate the biodegradability of the lotions. The research found that 99 percent of the material biodegraded in seawater within 60-80 days, while no evidence of toxicity to micro-organisms and other sea life was detected. The research also found that Beach Buff’s waterproof formula allows less than three percent of the product to come off in the ocean, which compares favorably to mass market brands that lose up to 29 percent of the product immediately upon entering the water. The American Lifeguard Association, which represents more than 10,000 active lifeguards across North America, has officially endorsed the Reef Safe product line.
