Great American Outpost Detailed in New Book

Local author depicts the history of Fort Laramie with never before published photographs.

Mount Pleasant, SC, May 29, 2010 --(PR.com)-- New from Arcadia Publishing and local author Starley Talbott comes Images of America: Fort Laramie. The book boasts more than 200 vintage, many previously unpublished, images depicting the importance of Fort Laramie, one of the last great American outposts on the Western Frontier.

Founded as the trading post Fort William in 1834, the fort became a U.S. military post in 1849. Beginning in 1841, emigrants stopped at Fort Laramie while traveling the Oregon, California, and Mormon Trails. Fort Laramie served as a gathering place for thousands of Native Americans and hosted the 1851 and 1868 treaty councils. Fort Laramie was acquired by the state of Wyoming in 1937, and the fort became a unit of the National Park System in 1938.

Starley hopes the readers will learn the significance of the Fort Laramie Historic Site and have a better understanding of the reality of what was the western front.

Highlights of Fort Laramie:
- Features never published photographs
- Showcases the last major outpost for pioneers and emigrants on the Great Migration West along the Oregon, California and Mormon Trails
- Depicts the Trappers, Traders, and early Emigrants
- Discusses the Grattan Massacre of 1854
