Online Australian Electronics Retailer Strives to Offer "Green" Products

Since 2002, Electronics Warehouse has focused primarily on selling rechargeable NiMH batteries and chargers to the Australian market, thanks to its successful eBay account. Now, with the launch of its new eCommerce website, the Australian electronics e-tailer hopes to educate a wider range of Australian customers on the sustainability of NiMH batteries and its own personal commitment to selling products that have minimal environmental impact on the environment.

Hobart, Australia, June 05, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Electronics Warehouse, a leading online retailer of electronics accessories and rechargeable batteries for mobile devices, announced today that it will seek to further promote its commitment to selling sustainable, eco-friendly products on its eCommerce website at www.electronicswarehouse.com.au.

Rechargeable Batteries and Protection of the Environment

Consumer batteries have been a constant concern for environmentalists for the past four decades, beginning with the dramatic rise in the use of disposable alkaline batteries in consumer electronics. While the popularization of NiCd, or “NiCad” disposable batteries offered a more sustainable option to disposable alkaline batteries, the Cadmium in NiCads proved to be equally as toxic to the environment as alkalines when disposing of them. The 1990s, however, saw the rise of NiMH rechargeable batteries, which offer a much less toxic design that holds its charge equally as well as a NiCad and benefits from the availability and recyclable nature of Nickel.

Capitalising on the Green Movement

While many companies worldwide have adopted “Green” business practices in order to gain a strong market position and garner goodwill with customers, Electronics Warehouse owner Steven Kellett comes from an environmental background, having begun his career as a chainman and land surveyor for the Hobart City Council is Tasmania. Steven explains that his desire to sell NiMH rechargeable batteries comes from his own personal commitment to the environment, explaining:

“Because of my previous work as a land surveyor, I was able to see firsthand the long-term effects of pollution, overdevelopment, and irresponsible human consumption on the environment. Even today, as an avid trout fisherman, I often fish Lake Pedder in Tasmania’s South West World Heritage region and I see how the logging industry has destroyed old growth forests, using trees that are several hundred years old for wood chips and replacing them with faster growing plantation species.

Knowing what I do about these issues, I could never sell products to my customers that are overtly destructive to the environment. That’s why I’ve always made NiMH rechargeable batteries the cornerstone of my business – if I can get people to switch from disposable batteries to cleaner, more sustainable rechargeables, that’s one small way I can help to improve the environment, especially considering the rise in battery use in mobile electronic devices.”

Over the next year, Electronics Warehouse will continue to bolster its image as an eco-leader in selling NiMH rechargeable batteries to the Australian market through improvements and enhancements to its website as well as an expansion of its environmentally responsible products. Their goal is to be seen by Australian customers as genuinely committed to selling environmentally responsible products.
