Diamond State BBQ Championship Moves to August

Dover, DE, June 16, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Dover Downs Hotel & Casino will present the Fifth Annual Diamond State BBQ Championship on Saturday, August 21, months earlier than previous years’ events held in October. The event is a sanctioned competition on the Kansas City Barbeque Society circuit and will again be held in the infield of Dover International Speedway® from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $5 for advance purchase, $7 at the gate, and free for children 12 and younger when accompanied by an adult.

“We are really excited about the summertime and anticipate this will be our best year ever,” said Fred Bohn, director of Banquets and the coordinator of the event. “Summer is the heart of BBQ season so we are expecting our largest crowd to date. This year we will host sizzling barbeque demonstration classes led by our top chefs, who will share their personal grilling techniques and BBQ secrets. Come out and enjoy the fun, sun, great food and entertainment.”

The barbecue championship is expected to bring nearly 100 barbecue teams to compete for cash and prizes in brisket, pork ribs, chicken, and pork shoulder categories. Planned events so far also include Delaware’s Strongest Man Contest, the Big Boys Toys Show sponsored by Central Delaware Chamber of Commerce, and the Delmarva Chapter Studebaker’s Club Muscle Car Show on pit road.

The Delaware’s Strongest Man Contest returns including the farmers walk, yoke pull, circus dumbbell, and stone load in several weight classes, including women’s. The 12” log press and dead lift competitions will be held on Friday, August 20. Entry forms may be requested by emailing Kyle Bixler at teambix@gmail.com. Vendors will bring a variety of merchandise, crafts, and lots of food such as beer can chicken, Herschel Walker ribs and chicken tenders (a regular feature at Dover Downs Hotel & Casino restaurants), Buntings Popcorn Station and Vitale’s Italian Ices, as well as BBQ food vendors, cold beer wagons, ice cream and much more. The Studebaker’s Club of Delmarva will lead a classic car and hot rod show on pit road with the area’s most unique vintage automobiles. Entertainment will include a performance by the Dover High School Rolling Thunder Drum Line. Additional entertainment and events are planned and will be announced in the coming weeks.
