The art of Dean Grommet is an expression of his times in the wilds of the world, some of which are now fading memories of a passing age.

His life experiences span six continents and more than three decades of travel in the pursuit of a passion to "drink the wild air". The young embers of this passion were originally stirred to life five decades ago while tramping the creeks and forests of Kentucky as a child, observing artifacts of primitive man, pursuing game, and generally seeking the raw edge of wilderness that is left to us in these modern times.

Eschewing many conventional artistic mediums, Dean turns to nature's own elements of stone, wood, and bone, among others. These he uses to create works that are imbued by the wild river of memory and experience flowing from his heart through his hands. He invests a pedigree of natural authenticity in his work that is only the result of diligent cultivation of an art that is an anachronism in these modern times. The results are strikingly iconic of times long past.

Dean will be present at the first showing in the 2010 Summer Art Social in Whitefish, Montana. This Summer Art Social is hosted by the Whitefish Community Foundation, and co-sponsored by the Iron Horse Foundation and Iron Horse Golf club. Whitefish's Summer Art Socials are events where Art, Friends, Food, Music, and Wine all come together in a beautiful alpine setting.

An evening that is sure to please every palette, culinary creations by Iron Horse's Master Chef Rob Waltz, and his award-winning staff, will be served along with a selection of the finest wines, accompanied by music from the Montana Midnight Quartet. This year's Social is being held at the prestigious Iron Horse Club situated in the mountains overlooking Whitefish and the Flathead Valley. Proceeds benefit the Whitefish Community Foundation's and Iron Horse Foundation's charitable gift funds.

Having chosen natural history as his theme and nature's resources as his medium, each of Dean's creations is a story-telling that harkens the mind's eye to a bygone age when life was unconstrained by the bonds of civilization. Deeply stirring impressions of nature's raw boldness and clever subtleties are the prizes won by those who possess Dean's works. More than mere art for the eye, they are an art that may be experienced viscerally through touch and function.

Dean’s love of natural history and indigenous cultures is reflected in his functional works of art. Casually elegant, they are often a study in contrasts of rough and smooth textures, simple and intricate designs, and organic and inorganic materials, all combined to create thoughtful transformations of nature as art in ways that echo the wild places of the world.
