San Francisco, CA, June 26, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Sandra Lee Gallery presents the works of local artist Donna McGinnis in the upcoming solo exhibition Clouds and Abstractions, on display July 6 through 28, 2010. The gallery welcomes the general public to the opening reception in honor of the artist, to be held Thursday, July 8, 5:30-7:30pm. McGinnis has exhibited extensively in local and national art venues, receiving widespread critical acclaim for her distinctively soft skyscapes that have been honed over decades of dedication towards her artistic practice.

This exhibition will feature the artist’s landscape paintings as well as her recent abstract pieces. For McGinnis, the move between the two styles is fluid and seamless. In her famed representational works, soft billowing clouds and warm gentle hues represent the California dreamscape, and glowing sunsets over misty grasslands blend together in stillness and silence in a vision of a pristine uninhabited local landscape. Thoughtful sweeping brushstrokes infuse these lushly rendered paintings with golden effervescence and earnest beauty.

In place of the smooth and polished surfaces of her landscapes, McGinnis’ abstract pieces incorporate roughened textures and thick swabs of paint that lull and fascinate with their rhythmic progression over the canvas. Abstraction for the artist takes the form of bold colors meticulously layered to create airy and ethereal forms suffused with the same golden light of her figurative pieces. Light, with all its wondrous and uplifting connotations, is an indelible mark of a McGinnis creation.

Sandra Lee Gallery is proud to present a range of pieces from McGinnis’s extensive oeuvre. The gallery will exhibit these works together in order to trace the evolution of the artist’s changing approach to the issue of representation in contemporary painting.
