Honolulu, HI, July 05, 2010 --(PR.com
)-- A local resident of Honolulu is amazed at the healthy results she obtained by simply practicing an innovative breathing technique called Buteyko. She has reduced her Asthma symptoms by as much as 85% and feels so much better. Her health history is typical of severe Asthmatics, she ended up at the emergency room every few months and found her symptoms hard to manage.
What is this breathing technique and how does it work?
Buteyko Breathing is a comprehensive approach to living with a core set of breathing exercises that reverses hyperventilation or over-breathing. The idea is to return the breathing volume back to normal at around 5 liters of air/minute. According to their instructor, Greg Baker, CBE (Certified Buteyko Educator) of Buteyko Learning Company says the impacts on the body of over-breathing is quite similar to over-eating. When we eat more calories than our body needs it causes us to gain weight. The impact to the body is extensive with heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, etc. It is the same with over-breathing or hyperventilation.
Over-breathing decreases carbon dioxide levels in the body needed to release oxygen from the blood. The result is a lack of oxygenation or hypoxia that causes a cascade of problems such as an impaired immune system, hypertension, hormonal changes, digestive issues, constriction and spasms of smooth muscle tissue, reduced blood flow to the brain and so on.
Typical conditions that may realize benefit from Buteyko Breathing are; Asthma, COPD, Emphysema, Anxiety - Panic Attacks, Hypertension, Snoring and Sleep Apnea. All of these and more were tested and confirmed by Russian Inventor, Doctor Konstantin Buteyko and his team of 200 MDs while he was alive starting in the early 1950s. As a member of the Soviet Union space exploration team, he studied breathing and air composition for their astronaut program. This led him to the discovery of the importance of carbon dioxide on managing oxygenation in the body.
What was the experience of the Hawaiian resident learning Buteyko Breathing?
Dianne is in her mid-fifties and has been struggling with very severe Asthma for many years. She suffered an extremely bad flu a while back that really took her symptoms to a new level. She has been on a medley of medications such as Symbicort, a combination corticosteroid and long acting anti-inflammatory, Medrol which is an oral corticosteroid similar to Prednisone, Albuterol delivered via nebulizer and other related medications. There is not much more to offer in the Asthma drug arsenal that will help her to manage the symptoms. It would not be incorrect to say that there is a real concern for her well being as she gets older.
She first started learning Buteyko Breathing with Greg Baker, CBE of Buteyko Learning Company in March of 2010. She worked with Greg one on one and slowly made progress towards reducing her symptoms. She completed the Basic Buteyko Workshop and then attended an eight week program designed to support the progress in breathing needed to reduce symptoms. The results have been amazing though with a few setbacks that is not surprising considering how severe and how long she has suffered from Asthma. At one point she had reduced her symptoms 85%, stopped needing to take the nebulizer at all from 4 times a day and reduced the Medrol 50%.
Then her doctor found she was getting increased pressure in her eyes that could damage her sight and potentially leave her blind. Which is a typical side effect of the corticosteroids so her doctor reduced her Medrol and Symbicort even further. Her symptoms increased though not to the severe levels she experienced before which was a surprise. In response Dianne redoubled her efforts with Buteyko Breathing and brought her symptoms back down. Her Buteyko Educator, Greg Baker, was careful to have her follow her doctor's instructions on medicine usage that he requires of all students. Her hope and trust is now in the Buteyko Breathing. She hopes that other folks in Hawaii can benefit from it.
Has Buteyko Breathing been confirmed to work for Asthma in clinical trials?
The answer is yes. There have been seven small to large clinical trials that have confirmed the Buteyko Breathing works to reduce Asthma symptoms. On average the trials found symptoms reductions of 50% within 2 weeks and 95% within 8 - 12 weeks. They also saw Reliever Inhaler use dropped 95% and preventer medications such as corticosteroids dropped 50% in this time frame. It was noted that the same level of lung capacity (referred to as Forced Expiratory Volume) remained even with a major drop in medications that could only be contributed to the Buteyko Breathing techniques.
The most recent clinical trial on Buteyko and Asthma was located in Calgary, Canada. The $1,000,000 price tag was paid for by a wealthy New York family whose son had his Asthma symptoms eliminated with Buteyko Breathing. The medical doctor who managed the trial made an amazing comment on the effectiveness of treating Asthma with Buteyko; "There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that the Buteyko Technique works," said Bob Cowie MD, Manager of Calgary Clinical Trial. "The results of this study shows it is a wonderful adjunct to conventional treatment of Asthma. We had super results that no one else has been able to match even with the best medication."
How can other residents of Hawaii learn Buteyko Breathing?
Greg Baker, CBE, the lead Buteyko Educator for Buteyko Learning Company offers the Basic Buteyko Workshop in the Honolulu area every few months as is possible. He will also be offering the workshops on the other islands with plans for Kona and Hilo as well as Kahului in the works.
Next Basic Buteyko Workshops in Hawaii starts in Honoululu on July 29th and 30th, 2010. Students can register at the company website.
Potential students can register for classes at the company website, www.ButeykoLearning.com. Greg Baker, CBE makes himself available for questions via email at firstname.lastname@example.org and can be reached at 503-395-8451.
