)-- According to a new study, an organic soy beverage enriched with bioactive peptides from soy and whey proteins significantly lowered fasting blood sugar by 39 and HbA1c by 1.62 after adjusting the baseline values in 12 weeks. A total of 72 type 2 diabetic patients with inadequate glycemic control (>8.0% HbA1c) despite diet, exercise, and oral medications were recruited in 3 different centers. This was a randomized double blind placebo controlled study with two arms, one arm received placebo and the other received SAI dietary supplement. The average HbA1c was reduced from 9.3 to 7.5 in patients who received SAI and patients with placebo reduced their HbA1c from 8.4 to 7.8. This is exciting as it shows that the soy beverage is just as effective as currently used drugs in normal type 2 diabetic patients or even better as it works where the drugs failed to reduce HbA1c levels in patients with poor glycemic control.
