SAI International's Soy Beverage Enriched with Bioactive Peptides from Soy and Whey Proteins Lower Blood Sugar and HbA1c in a Multicenter Clinical Study

American diabetes association’s 70th scientific sessions were held recently in Orlando, Florida. This is a great annual event where the world's greatest annual research and clinical meeting on diabetes takes place.

Geneva, IL, July 08, 2010 --( According to a new study, an organic soy beverage enriched with bioactive peptides from soy and whey proteins significantly lowered fasting blood sugar by 39 and HbA1c by 1.62 after adjusting the baseline values in 12 weeks. A total of 72 type 2 diabetic patients with inadequate glycemic control (>8.0% HbA1c) despite diet, exercise, and oral medications were recruited in 3 different centers. This was a randomized double blind placebo controlled study with two arms, one arm received placebo and the other received SAI dietary supplement. The average HbA1c was reduced from 9.3 to 7.5 in patients who received SAI and patients with placebo reduced their HbA1c from 8.4 to 7.8. This is exciting as it shows that the soy beverage is just as effective as currently used drugs in normal type 2 diabetic patients or even better as it works where the drugs failed to reduce HbA1c levels in patients with poor glycemic control. This research was presented by Vijai Pasupuleti, president of SAI International ( at American Diabetes Association’s 70th Scientific Meetings in Orlando on June 27, 2010.

It is well known that many people with long history of type 2 diabetes have a hard time controlling their sugar levels and as a result their HbA1c levels go beyond 8.0 even when they are on oral medications and following good diet and exercise. There are several reasons for this to happen: over a period of time the ability to secrete insulin decreases, insulin resistance increases, oxidative stress increases, and gradual declining of beta cell function and so on. Poorly controlled diabetes leads to several complications such as heart attacks, strokes, retinopathy, neuropathy, nephropathy, leg amputations. Therefore, it is important control the glycemic levels to minimize morbidity and mortality, says Dr. Pasupuleti. His personal experience as a type 2 diabetic and extensive research shows that no single ingredient can do the trick, rather a combination of several ingredients at their optimal dose is necessary to alleviate hyperglycemia in these hard to control type 2 diabetic patients.

Dr. Pasupuleti experimented on himself before he came to a conclusion that there is no one single magic bullet for diabetes and only clinically proven multi- functional ingredients at their optimal dose working in synergy is the best option for type 2 diabetic patients. Dr. Pasupuleti believes that the key to successful diabetic foods and beverages is reducing blood glucose levels by lowering glycemic index/load, inhibiting hepatic glucose output, increasing insulin sensitivity and production, slowing down the digestion of carbohydrates, and relieving the oxidative stress to alleviate diabetes-related complications. All of these actions can be successfully achieved with a combination of clinically proven food ingredients and that is what exactly he did for his own use. Later he conducted two clinical studies and the results were outstanding.

“The best part of this beverage is that it provides energy which many diabetic patients welcome and no side effects,” Pasupuleti said.
