Speaking of Women’s Health Honors Dr. Etta Pisano

Foundation Recognizes Doctor for Breast Cancer Research

Raleigh, NC, December 12, 2006 --(PR.com)-- Speaking of Women’s Health honored Dr. Etta Pisano at the Speaking of Women’s Health conference on Saturday, Dec. 9 at the North Raleigh Hilton. Dr. Pisano was recognized for her breast cancer research as a vice dean and professor of radiology and biomedical engineering at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine and as director of the UNC Biomedical Research Imaging Center. A member of the team that developed the first digital mammography device, she was the principal investigator in a 2005 New England Journal of Medicine study that showed that doctors using the device were four times more likely to recognize cancers in women under 50 and spot smaller tumors that are easier to treat. She has worked on more than 50 grants and contracts, won three patents, earned 20 professional honors and received the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School System’s Volunteer of the Year award in 2004.

“Dr. Pisano’s years of work in digital imaging has made her a leader in breast cancer research, ” said Tobi Bowen, beneficiary sponsor member for the event. “Through her constant efforts to make breast cancer detection safer and more convenient for women and the doctors who examine them, as well as her other considerable involvement in health research, she has proven to be a woman most deserving of recognition with this award.”
