The festival is organised as a competition, with prizes for the most popular performers in several categories. To illustrate the international nature of the musical offerings, a salsa band won their section at a time when Latin American dance music was very popular in Cairo.
The festival also showcases traditional Egyptian music, and celebrates famous Egyptian artistes for their contribution to the cultural life of the country. As well as musical performances, which take place all over the city, theatre shows in the conference centre’s Cheops Theatre are also given.
