Department of Defense’s Washington Headquarters Services Talks About Sustainability and Green Building to the Center for Environmental Innovation and Leadership (CEIL)

DoD’s Washington Headquarters Services (WHS) Sustainable / LEED program manager discusses how WHS’ building renovation programs for the Pentagon and National Capital Region will improve environmental sustainability and meet the mandates of Executive Order 13514.

Alexandria, VA, August 04, 2010 --(PR.com)-- The Center for Environmental Innovation and Leadership’s featured podcast this week is an interview with the DoD’s Washington Headquarters Services (WHS) Sustainable / LEED program manager, Crystall Merlino. Ms. Merlino discusses WHS’ building renovation programs for the Pentagon and National Capital Region, which will improve environmental sustainability and meet the mandates of Executive Order 13514. EO 13514, issued by President Obama in November, requires federal agencies to reduce energy use, conserve resources and make all operations, processes and facilities more green.

“The Executive Order has aggressive goals,” Merlino explains. “It’s going to be a tough challenge to meet the greenhouse gas emission targets and set forth our reduction plans.”

The DoD issued their Sustainability Plan in June, which set objectives that must be met by all of their facilities. The plans highlight goals for energy and water intensity reduction, as well goals to reduce fleet and petroleum sources. “We are working on our greenhouse gas reduction plan, which is our first priority for meeting the goals set by EO 13514,” says Merlino.

The WHS works to implement environmentally sustainable programs and energy-efficient upgrades for the DoD buildings, which includes the Pentagon. “Throughout all of our buildings we are integrating sustainability through our contracts, renovations, and upgrades within the buildings,” says Merlino. The Pentagon is currently finishing the final renovation of the Pentagon (Wedge 5) with upgrades including an energy-efficient design for the HVAC system, water-efficient plumbing systems, and replacing windows and insulation to save energy. “We currently have 7 LEED certifications on the reservation, proving that our sustainable efforts have helped us become a more energy-efficient building,” she says.

Crystall Merlino will speak more about the programs and progress made by the DoD at CEIL’s GOVgreen Conference and Exposition on November 9 – 10 in Washington, D.C.
