New Release Brings Attention to Underserved Gifted and Talented Students in Rural Schools; Book by Donald Kordosky, Published by Dog Ear Publishing

Oakridge, OR, August 28, 2010 --(PR.com)-- The U.S. educational system is failing gifted children in small towns across the United States, according to this book, which provides a solution to this crisis in learning. Gifted education receives almost no federal and state funding. In fact, the 378,000 gifted children in rural public schools often get nothing more than additional work that doesn’t line up with their needs or talents, as schools try to implement “one-size-fits-all” ways of instruction, the author claims. Instead of helping such students achieve their dreams, the current system of inadequate gifted programs brings emotional, cognitive and psychological damage, the author writes. The problems affect not only the students themselves but also their community – and the nation – as the contributions they could have made are lost.

In Rural Gifted Students: Victims of Public Education, published by Dog Ear Publishing, the author explores how gifted students in rural communities are educated and proposes an alternative that will allow gifted and talented children to realize their hopes and dreams. As Dayville, Ore., Superintendent Debbie Gillespie writes in the book’s introduction, “Dr. Kordosky brings a focused attention to the forefront of educational awareness in the financial and practical gaps of meeting the needs of our rural students.” His work not only details ways to identify talented and gifted students, but also includes solutions to the problem of how to educate those students with a limited budget and limited staff. Parents and educators in rural school systems will be inspired by the ideas in this book that will help some of our country’s brightest students reach their full potential.

Don Kordosky received a master’s degree in science education from Oregon State University and a doctorate from Walden University, where he developed a program emphasizing rural gifted education reform. He is one of only two public school administrators in Oregon to receive the Distinguished Administrator certificate from the Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission. He serves as superintendent of the Oakridge School District in the Cascade Mountains and is the force behind KOR-Education, an organization that focuses on sparking the evolution of public education through system changes.
