Professor David Vaccari of Stevens Institute of Technology Receives AEESP Education Award

Hoboken, NJ, September 04, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Dr. David Vaccari, associate professor at Stevens Institute of Technology, has recently been selected by the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors (AEESP) to receive the organization’s 2010 educator award.

Sponsored by John Wiley & Sons, Inc., the AEESP Award for Outstanding Contribution to Environmental Engineering and Science Education recognizes an AEESP member for excellence in student development, scholarship, service, and other significant achievements. Nominees for this annual award are submitted via recommendation letters from students, colleagues, and industry professionals. The commendation will be presented October 4 during the AEESP Meet and Greet at WEFTEC 2010 in New Orleans.

“As Director of the Civil, Environmental and Ocean Engineering Department, Dr. Vaccari has worked tirelessly to inspire students and enhance their learning through involvement in leading-edge research projects with far-ranging benefits to society,” says Dr. Michael Bruno, Dean of the Schaefer School of Engineering. “Significantly, David leads by example, having recently authored several seminal publications addressing the depletion of important phosphorus resources.”

In 2009, Dr. Vaccari’s article, titled "Phosphorus: A Looming Crisis,” appeared in Scientific American to address the potential of peak phosphorus. As an elemental ingredient in commercial fertilizers, phosphorus has been and remains critical to global agricultural production. His article frames dwindling American phosphorus resources as having the potential to cause geostrategic repercussions.

Dr. Vaccari is also a member of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s Science Advisory Board, and was last year named Educator of the Year by the New Jersey Chapter of the American Council of Engineering Companies.
