Memories of Coming of Age in Noogie Circles, Published by Outskirts Press

Ames, IA, September 06, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Author, professor and retired counselor Dr. William C. Rice announced today the release of his memoir, Noogie Circles, published by Outskirts Press. Readers will appreciate and learn from the insights offered in Dr. Rice’s tale of boys growing up while grappling with this harsh, manly world and learning how to silently endure the pain of endless competitions.

“You guys ready? I’m gonna cause some real pain!” So began each of the noogie circle recess rituals at Roosevelt Junior High School in Susanville, California, a rough and tumble lumberjack town where grown men were constantly pitting themselves against each other and young boys had to prepare themselves for a life of one kind of pain or another.

After gathering in a circle the boys would slam their knuckles as hard as they could, noogie style, into each others upper arms until only one victorious, bruised and battered boy stood alone. Every one else had shamefully cried “uncle.”

In this young male world of heavily Brylcreemed hair and t-shirt sleeves rolled up over the vulnerable flesh of upper arms, life sometimes seemed an endless succession of these challenging noogie circles, but the winners always received the highest badges of courage as they learned to endure pain without wincing or voicing complaints.

A fascinating day to day account of the macho activities of these boys working so hard to become men, Noogie Circles is also a memoir with lessons for all readers -- male or female -- about the nature of the culture of these times.

Noogie Circles is available on-line in paperback through Amazon and Barnes and Noble and at www.outskirtspress.com/bookstore for a maximum trade discount in quantities of ten or more.
