Kingdom Technology – Tackling E-Waste, Creating Jobs, and Providing Affordable Technology to Those in Need

Local Athens, GA business creates social change and reduces e-waste by refurbishing, reusing, and recycling old computers.

Athens, GA, September 10, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Kingdom Technology announces its strategy to reduce the earth's carbon footprint while helping to provide affordable technology to those in need. Located in historic Athens, Georgia; Kingdom Technology specializes in repairing, refurbishing, and recycling outdated and non working computers. “Our vision is two-fold," says proprietor James Walker. "We are reducing e-waste by keeping these computers and other devices out of our landfills, and at the same time, we are providing affordable technology to those who otherwise could not afford it."

The idea behind Kingdom Technology emerged 4 years ago. James Walker was pondering the problem of providing access to technology for his 9 children. He began updating and refurbishing computers that were just going to be thrown away, and found that they worked perfectly well. He and his wife began thinking about all of the discarded technology, did their research, and decided that they had to do something about the rapidly growing problem of e-waste. "I quickly learned that e-waste is a massive environmental problem that thus far has received little attention. We are hoping to change this by increasing awareness and decreasing the amount of e-waste entering the landfills."

The majority of computers that Kingdom Technology receives can be repaired or fully refurbished. These refurbished computers are then offered at an extremely low cost, starting at just $100.00 for a desktop computer, monitor, and keyboard. Others are used to teach at-risk youth. In the summer of 2009, Kingdom Technology participated in Clarke County's Summer Youth Program, sponsored by Teen Works, and trained 16 teens in technology repair, basic computer skills, and soft skills, such as work place etiquette, resume building, and interviewing. The small amount of equipment that cannot be repaired is currently sent to an environmentally responsible recycling partner. As they grow, they want to create their own certified recycling center, providing even more jobs locally and statewide. Their ultimate goal is to continue to provide jobs and affordable technology, while making a positive impact on the planet. “We care deeply about our environment and our community, and will work tirelessly to serve both,” said Walker.
