Diamond Packaging Wins Three Awards in International Print Competition

Awards showcase its folding carton decorating capabilities, including specialty coating, foil stamping, and embossing.

Rochester, NY, September 16, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Diamond Packaging earned three awards in the 61st annual Premier Print Awards Competition, the graphic arts industry's largest and most prestigious international printing competition. Printing Industries of America hosts the Premier Print Awards, which recognizes those responsible for the creation and production of superior print. The event promotes excellence in print communications and rewards companies and individuals who produce the best in printed media.

Diamond competed against more than 3,200 entries from printing and graphic arts firms around the world and received Certificates of Merit for its 2010 corporate calendar, the Godiva 2009 Halloween Collection, and the L’Oreal USA / Matrix 2009 Holiday Collection.

Michael Makin, president and CEO of Printing Industries of America, notes, “Each year, the field of entries brings impressive work from some of the best printers in the world. Only a small number of companies receive any award. The craftsmanship and hard work of Diamond Packaging enabled them to produce multiple award-winning pieces in the face of some very strong competition.”

Diamond was recognized for its contributions to sustainable packaging by winning in the Environmentally Sound category for its 2010 corporate calendar, a popular promotional item given to customers and prospects.

This year's surfing theme features images of a vintage 1960's-era VW bus and surfboards, decorated with the latest in package printing technologies. The overall presentation imparts unusual depth and distinction by combining innovative structural design with specialty printing and finishing techniques. It also demonstrates Diamond’s expertise in sustainable packaging design, through right sizing, material selection, and the use of MiraFoil® coating.

The header is highly decorated with UV gloss spot coating, flat foil stamping (logo and VW bus trim accents), holographic foil stamping (water), and multi-level embossing (VW bus and surfboard).

The backers were die cut in the shape of three different surfboard styles and enhanced with MiraFoil®, an environmentally-friendly specialty metallic coating. MiraFoil® is an economical, in-line alternative to foil stamping which uses no heavy metals and results in less material and energy usage compared to an off-line foil stamping process.

Diamond re-sized the backers, calendar pages, and shipper compared to previous years to reduce its environmental impact. Reducing the overall calendar weight offered the most significant opportunity to conserve raw materials and energy, reduce greenhouse gases, and minimize discards. This year’s calendar weighs between 17-57% less than calendars in recent years.

Diamond won recognition in the Finishing Techniques (Specialty Inks or Coatings) category for Godiva’s 2009 Halloween Collection.

The tuck top, auto bottom and full seal end cartons feature a combination of die cutting and special coating techniques that complement the Halloween-inspired graphic design.

The cartons were offset printed with four color process inks and two hits PMS #4975 in-line with UV gloss spot coating (pumpkin, bat, swirls, and text), and an overall textured (reticulated) coating. The reticulated coating imparts a raised, thermographic-like textured finish without utilizing specialized board or requiring a separate embossing pass.

Diamond also won in the Cartons and Containers category for L’Oreal USA/Matrix’ 2009 Holiday Collection.

Prominently displayed at fine hair salons nationwide, the annual promotion is a proven success and highlights the value of creativity and shelf appeal.

Holiday gift sets were launched for four popular lines (Amplify®, Biolage®, Sleek.look®, and Vavoom®) in distinctive packaging with brand-identified colors. The creative cartons deliver impact at salons, and help reinforce a fashion-forward image for the company. All cartons feature a custom gold glitter, pearl-coated paperboard that captures the essence of luxury. The attractive graphics are enhanced by decorative foil stamping on the front and side panels.
