The IDAs received 1000 entries from 52 countries and involved a vigorous judging process. The awards celebrate the world's most visionary designers and promote the appreciation of design worldwide.

According to the designers, thinkers and entrepreneurs who created the International Design Awards in 2007 as a response to the lack of recognition and celebration for smart and sustainable design, “The IDA exists to recognize, celebrate and promote legendary design visionaries… in architecture and interior, product, graphic, and fashion design.”

“IDA aspires to draw attention to the iconoclasm of designers worldwide conceptualizing and producing smart solutions to design problems. It is rare and multidisciplinary by design, aligning designers internationally with cross-disciplinary inspiration and dialogue.”

Jurors included Qingyun Ma, Dean of Architecture, University of Southern California; Gwynne Pugh, Pugh+Scarpa Architects; Kahi Lee, Host, HGTV's "Design on a Dime" and Style Network's "My Celebrity Home"; Rido Busse, Chairman, German Industry and Trade Board; John Dunnigan, Chair, Department of Furniture, Rhode Island School of Design; and Brandusa Niro, Editor-in-Chief and Founder, Fashion Week Daily; and other leaders and editors in the design fields.

This IDA 2009, announced in March 2010, is the fourth award by won by Wind Simplicity, since the company’s inception in Ontario Canada in 2007, in addition to 2 finalist titles and 2 honourable mentions:
