Adelphi University to Host the Dynamic Music and Dance Performance, “Taikoza: Live!,” on October 9, 2010

Adelphi University is pleased to host the thundering drum group, Taikoza.

Garden City, NY, October 07, 2010 --(PR.com)-- The group will perform two shows on Saturday, October 9, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. in the Concert Hall of the Adelphi University Performing Arts Center (AU PAC), 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY. The day will also feature a Taikoza: Live! Children’s Workshop at 1:00 p.m., in which a limited number of children will have the opportunity to work with the Taikoza Company and play the drums themselves.

The taiko is a large, barrel-like drum that can fill the air with the sounds of rolling thunder. Drawing from Japan’s rich tradition of music and performance, Taikoza incorporates two kinds of bamboo flutes called the shakuhachi and the fue, a stringed instrument called the koto, and the ancestral drums, to create a new sound from these traditional instruments.

Taikoza was formed in New York City by members of Ondekoza, a group that re-popularized the taiko in Japan in the 1960s and consequently introduced it to the world. The members of Taikoza have brought their rich sound to such prestigious establishments as Carnegie Hall, Boston Symphony Hall, Suntory Hall, Osaka Festival Hall, Lincoln Center, and others. They have performed all over the world, with shows in Russia, Italy, Brazil, Argentina, Switzerland, Germany, France, Mexico, and the Republic of Georgia. Taikoza presents a popular program for schools in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and Virginia through Young Audiences Arts for Learning and Symphony Space. The group has toured schools in Birmingham, Alabama that were funded by a National Endowment for the Arts grant for the Birmingham International Festival.

Taikoza’s new CD has been nominated as the best Asian Ethnic Album for the Just Plain Folks Music Award. The group has appeared on various television broadcasts including the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the History Channel’s “History vs. Hollywood,” and ESPN’s Battle of the Giants World Sumo Challenge. They recently recorded music for the Nintendo Wii game, Red Steel 1 and 2.

Individual tickets for this event are on sale now and will be available at the door for $12 or $15 depending on seating, and $10 for the Taikoza: Live! Children’s Workshop. This is the first event of a new AU PAC Family Series, the next event will be “Knick Knack Paddy Whack Sing Along” with folk singer Nyssa Brown on Thursday, November 11, 2010.
