It was an unlikely set of players to try to save the day in a heart-stopping basketball game in 1978. LSU’s five starters had fouled out against Kentucky, the top team in the nation. Left on the floor for the Tigers were five subs: a senior with a bum knee, a black Jewish freshman, a walk-on and two white boys: one, a dentist’s son from New Orleans; and the other, a 7-foot surfer from Florida. Their inspiration was their eccentric coach. LSU's largest basketball crowd watched what happened next.

Lake Charles, LA, October 08, 2010 --(PR.com)-- It was an unlikely set of players to try to save the day in a heart-stopping basketball game Feb. 11, 1978. LSU’s five starters had fouled out against Kentucky, the No. 1-ranked team in the nation. Left on the floor for the Tigers were five substitutes: a senior with a bum knee, a black Jewish freshman, a walk-on and two white boys: one, a dentist’s son from New Orleans; and the other, a 7-foot surfer dude from Florida. Their inspiration was their eccentric coach Dale Brown. In a rivalry and a game that involved roughness on and off the court, self-gratification, race relations and international folk dance, the largest crowd in LSU basketball history watched what happened next.

For LSU fans, this is the story of the coaches, players and others involved in the Impossible Dream, the game that set the stage for LSU’s run of 15 consecutive seasons of postseason play under Brown, including two Final Fours.

For Kentucky fans, this is a story of one of UK’s greatest championship teams, in which the Wildcats lost only two games the entire season. Kentucky had a player (Rick Robey) and a coach (Joe Dean Jr.) from Louisiana, while LSU had two players from Kentucky (Kenny Higgs and Rudy Macklin) along with a coach (Ron Abernathy) from the Commonwealth.

For sports fans, this is the story of a game on the cusp of college basketball’s prominence. The 1978 game between LSU and Kentucky came just before ESPN began, just before the NCAA Tournament went from 32 to 48 teams, and just before Larry Bird and Magic Johnson created March Madness in 1979.
