Nine Plus Art Equals Two; Exhibit Marks Austin Art Space Second Anniversary

Austin, TX, October 10, 2010 --(PR.com)-- The official two year anniversary of Austin Art Space will feature the nine artists that make the space possible. The “9+Art=2” exhibit includes all nine resident artists that currently occupy studio space. Nine artists plus their art are equal to the two year mark. The exhibit runs October 11-31, 2010 with the formal celebration slated for a special artists’ celebration reception on October 22 from 6:00-8:00 pm.

Austin Art Space opened in November 2008 as a cooperative space for established and emerging artists to create, collaborate and present their work. Three of the founding artists: Valerie Walden, Jan Knox and Rebecca Bennett expanded on their experiences together at Artspoken Gallery to create a unique art venue in north Austin. Despite protracted economic uncertainty, the gallery has flourished.

Valerie Walden, manager of the co-op said, “It has been challenging to steer an art gallery through these economic seas. But, it’s been invigorating to present so much art to so many people in such a short time. Since we opened 23 months ago, Austin Art Space has hosted 26 separate exhibitions including six juried shows. And, we have showcased over 100 different artists from all over Texas, and as far away as Alaska, France, South Africa and New Zealand. We think Austin Art Space has become an integral part of the local and regional art scenes.”

The October 22 reception will be both a celebration and affirmation for the dedicated, prolific artists-in-residence. The initial roster of artists has changed somewhat over the years, but many of the original residents remain and the Art Space oeuvre has grown considerably. The gallery will be hung with paintings that range from the literal to the abstract, from oils, pastels and watercolors to mixed media, collage and photography, from the imposing to the diminutive. The working studio space will handle the overflow artwork and will be open to the public for viewing. In all, over 100 pieces will be on display.

A cadre of patrons, local artists and friends are expected to attend the wine and hors d’oeuvres anniversary celebration reception. Collectively, the artists are members of numerous art groups on the local and regional level including the Austin Visual Arts Association, the Austin Pastel Society, the Southwest Pastel Society, Plein Air Austin, Waterloo Watercolor Group and Creative Arts Society. Many of the artists have an enthusiastic followings of art lovers including regular patrons of the former Artspoken that are expected to turn out to mark the occasion.

The Austin Art Space calendar is full for the remainder of the year. Gilbert Granado will present “A Study in Omissions” November 1-14. Following, the gallery continues a tradition from Artspoken by holding the Sixth Annual “12Buy12” Show, November 16-December 18 with the artists’ reception on November 20. It is a juried exhibition and sale that typically includes more than 100 works no larger than 12”x12” created by artists from all over the world. The small size makes the art more affordable for holiday gift giving. This year’s juror is Carl McQueary, respected art collector, art scholar and life-long Texas historian. After that exhibit completes its run, the gallery will be closed until the New Year.
