Adelphi University’s Institute for Parenting to Host Master Seminar Presented by Joy Osofsky, Ph.D.
Adelphi University’s Institute for Parenting is pleased to host its fourth annual Master Seminar, “Trauma Through the Eyes of a Young Child: Understanding and Helping Children and Families.”
Garden City, NY, October 13, 2010 --(PR.com)-- The event will take place on Friday, October 22, 2010, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on the second floor of Adelphi’s Ruth S. Harley University Center, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY. The presenter, Dr. Joy Osofsky, will be available for a book signing from 4:00 to 4:30 p.m.
Current research in the science of early childhood development and neuropsychology reveals that even very young children are traumatized by exposure to violence and maltreatment. The effects of these traumatic experiences on the emotional and behavioral development of children and their caregivers will be the focus of this training. Dr. Osofsky will explore early relationships and environments and teach the recognition of symptoms and responses in children who have experienced trauma.
Through the use of lecture, discussion, and video presentations, the importance of direct observation and relationship-based assessments and an approach to treatment called Child-Parent Psychotherapy (CPP) will be elucidated. The seminar will benefit parent educators, mental health clinicians, professionals who work in early intervention or the child welfare system, early childhood educators, pediatricians, psychiatrists, nurses, and other parent-child health care professionals whose work influences the lives of families and children.
Dr. Osofsky is the director of the Harris Center for Infant Mental Health at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. She is also the co-director of the Louisiana Rural Trauma Services Center, and previously served as president of the Zero to Three/National Center for Infants, Toddlers and Families, as well as the World Association for Infant Mental Health. Her research focuses on infants, children, and families exposed to community and domestic violence, maltreatment, and disasters. Dr. Osofsky is the author of Young Children and Trauma: Intervention and Treatment, Protecting Young Children in Violent Environments, and Children in a Violent Society. All three books will be available for purchase and signing at the event.
