Dramatics at Stevens started almost as soon as the school opened its doors in 1870. During the first 40 years, there were many different clubs for theater, but none lasted more than a few years. Then, in 1909, the Junior Class produced a show, It Happened Here, written and musically composed by two students. The show was so successful that many Stevens’ students felt that a group should be formed to present theatrical works on an ongoing basis. On November 14, 1910, the first general meeting of the Stevens Dramatic Society (SDS) was held, and their first show was produced in the spring of 1911. Most shows then were written by students, both the script and the score, including one still being produced today The Goodship Pride of Communipaw Flats. Over the years, SDS turned more towards scripted shows, but they have continuously produced theatrical productions each year since their founding. SDS is now the oldest continuous student organization at Stevens, as well as being one of the largest. For more information on SDS, please visit www.stevens.edu/sds.

The national theater honors fraternity Theta Alpha Phi (TAP) is an honor society that confers nationally recognized honor on undergraduate students who earn a specified high level of quality in theater study and production at colleges and universities across the nation. In 1960, due greatly to the guidance of Yelena Petrovna, director of the Stevens Theater and SDS at that time, TAP granted Stevens a chapter of their national theater honor society. Since then, the New Jersey Alpha Chapter of TAP has been recognizing excellence in the theater arts at Stevens, as well as producing small shows and presenting workshops. The Stevens chapter was the first chapter of TAP in New Jersey and, to this day, the only chapter at a primarily engineering and science school nationwide. Currently, the chapter has nine undergraduate members and over 200 alumni members. For more information on TAP, please visit www.stevens.edu/tap.
