Power of Human Spirit to Endure Prejudice Told in Letter to Emily, Published by Outskirts Press
Cullowhee, NC, October 31, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Author Marilyn Jody today announced the release of her memoir, Letter to Emily, published by Outskirts Press. Addressed to Emily Dickinson – who knew so well what it means to live a secret life -- Jody’s memoir tells the story of a love between two women that spans more than fifty years, illustrating the power of the human spirit to survive despite the adversity of homophobic prejudice and discrimination.
Marilyn Jody has spent her career as a professor of literature, but when she teaches a class on gay and lesbian writers, she finds she must search her own soul and endure more than one crisis as she decides to openly tell her own story.
By framing her story as a response to Emily Dickinson’s poem “This is My Letter to the World” and telling that story so candidly, Jody moves her readers to a new empathy for the individuality of others, amplifying the power of the poem’s closing line: “Judge tenderly of me.” The author understands and is able to dramatically convey the desperation that comes for anyone from the fear of disclosure and the painful humiliation that results from having to hide from others such a significant part of oneself, whatever that part may be.
The myths, insidious misinformation and cruel social pressure that these two women must overcome is a reflection of the daily heroism that many ordinary people must achieve just to maintain some measure of self esteem in the diverse, but too frequently prejudiced world we live in.
Jody’s memoir is not a celebrity tell-all, but rather an inspirational tale of the power of love, candidly told and delicately revealed.
