Bayer MaterialScience LLC Scientist Highlights Environmentally Friendly Coatings for Bridge Structures

Pittsburgh, PA, November 06, 2010 --(PR.com)-- A new generation of waterborne polyurethane coatings is a viable option for bridge structures, offering performance properties that are comparable to traditional solventborne coatings, yet are more environmentally friendly. Steven Reinstadtler, market development manager – Construction and Green Building Initiative, Bayer MaterialScience LLC, addressed this topic at the North American Industrial (NAI) Coatings Show.

Reinstadtler presented “Environmentally Friendly Graffiti Resistant Coatings: Waterborne Polyurethane Coatings for Bridge Structures that Actually Work” as part of the Mean & Green track at the show.

According to Reinstadtler, two-component (2K) waterborne resins systems from Bayer MaterialScience offer the following desirable physical traits:

· Near-zero volatile organic compound (VOC) formulas with excellent abrasion, chemical and weathering resistance;
· No odor when applied in the field with other trades or pedestrians present;
· Excellent weatherability, durability and graffiti resistance;
· Adjustable gloss levels – from high gloss to matte without the use of flattening agents; and
· Ability to be used as an acceptable topcoat for other primers and midcoats.

“These coatings demonstrate that applicators can choose a more sustainable coating option without having to sacrifice performance and durability,” said Reinstadtler, who explains that these 2K waterborne coatings are an excellent option for concrete bridge infrastructure such as beams, columns and abutments. “In addition, these versatile coatings can also protect glass or plastic windbreaks, transit structures or support structures,” he continued.

The NAI Coatings Show, which took place in October at the Indianapolis Convention Center in Indianapolis, is the largest industrial coatings conference in North America. According to show organizers, it is the only event that provides a technical program and exhibits focused exclusively on industrial and protective coatings.
