Lesbian Website Autostraddle.com Celebrates Groundbreaking 2011 Calendar, Co-Hosts Los Angeles Launch Party with PYT Productions

Autostraddle.com created an all-lesbian calendar and will celebrate the 2011 Calendar Girls at H.Wood in Los Angeles with PYT Productions on December 17th.

Los Angeles, CA, December 14, 2010 --(PR.com)-- They’re community activists, actresses, musicians, party promoters, writers, comedians, yoga teachers, and educators. They wear boyshorts, lace bustiers, g-strings, tank tops, lace, knee-socks, gauzy tees, fishnets, sports bras, bikinis, neckties and boxers. They're all gay.

They’re the 2011 Autostraddle Calendar Girls.

It’s no secret that funding media is difficult these days, and Autostraddle.com, the web’s leading independently-owned lesbian website, has been reinventing the wheel in this regard since day one. “Every month is different, but generally our operating budget draws primarily from reader donations and secondarily from advertising, our annual pride party and merchandise sales,” says CEO Marie Bernard. “The Calendar idea was a no-brainer -- we’ve got a prodigious photographer [Robin Roemer] on staff, we’d fill a giant void in the calendar market, and we’d support our ongoing existence. Why let men’s magazines corner the market on monthly devotionals to really really really good looking women?”

Along with stylist Sarah Medd, Celebrity Photographer Robin Roemer -- who has set her lens on everyone from Lady Gaga to Tegan & Sara to The B-52s -- started the hunt for models in early 2010, when Miss January’s debut was accompanied by a call for queer models in the NYC area with unique personalities and a readiness to be photographed in their underpants.

Robin hoped to “bring more depth and Realness to the whole ‘calendar girl’ thing while providing fun eye candy for our readers” and the overwhelmingly positive response was immediate.

The applications came rolling in and Robin and Sara hand-picked 12 girls for the final product, including actress Nicole Pacent (Anyone But Me) and stylist/party-promoter Romi Klinger (PYT Productions, The Real L Word), to represent a racially and physically diverse cross-section of twentysomething queers.

Robin says: “My style team and I were careful to adhere to each girl’s personal style. And the photographs themselves were simple, natural and introspective.”

Vega had similar aims for the calendar design: “We wanted to create a product reflective of a sophisticated, sexy and edgy queer sensibility,” says Design Director Alex Vega, who designed the calendar itself. “I think we succeeded.”

Autostraddle will be celebrating the launch of this one-of-a-kind project at H.Wood on December 17th at the official Calendar Girls Party produced by PYT Productions, “Holiday Straddle.” HWood is located on 1738 N. Orange Drive, Hollywood, CA, 90028.
