Investor Solutions Advisor, Robert Gordon, Speaks at Miami High Schools

Senior Financial Advisor Robert Gordon spoke with Miami HS students about basic finance issues to be prepared for after graduation.

Miami, FL, December 15, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Rob Gordon, Senior Financial Advisor with local investment and financial planning firm Investor Solutions, Inc., has recently been conducting the “Math & Money” program at public high schools in Miami Dade to help provide students a practical link between academics, careers and everyday life. Mr. Gordon has presented the program at both Miami Springs and Miami Central Senior High Schools, and he hopes to expand the program to many more high schools in 2011. “Academic calendars have become so packed with performance-oriented tests and measures that it is hard for administrators, teachers and students to remember that learning is fun and useful,” said Mr. Gordon.

Mr. Gordon is involved in a number of public education-oriented initiatives, including the advisory board of Teach for America and the Miami Springs Education Advisory Board, and he is an active leader with the 100 Black Men of South Florida’s Leadership Academy.

“The issues that these young people face are complex at the social, academic and other levels,” said Gordon, adding, “Money and its management are critical elements to their long-term success and the sustainability of their professional aspirations.”

He also discussed issues facing high school seniors in their immediate futures. These included college selection and getting the most bang for your college buck, career planning, the critical role of the military, and public service options such as the U.S. Peace Corps, Teach for America and other organizations that offer valuable leadership experience and community service.

So far, the results have been positive: students value the “Math & Money” presentation and are able to draw helpful advice for their futures. Robert Nolin, who teaches Economics at Miami Springs Senior High, commented that his students yearn for community involvement, especially from professionals who can share real life experiences. As one of Mr. Nolan’s students noted, “We really appreciated the opportunity to hear from Mr. Gordon. He seems to have a wide range of professional and educational experiences. He was down to earth in his descriptions and really seemed genuine in his commitment to young people.”

One Miami Central Senior High School student mentioned that he hopes to attend Harvard University for his undergraduate studies. Mr. Gordon encouraged him to shoot high but to create a plan that includes applying to a broad range of schools in case finances or the admissions decisions don’t line up with those aspirations. He also noted that many of the nation’s most competitive colleges and universities are eager to receive applications from promising students who may be the first in their families to attend college, are members of an ethnic minority or who have unique accomplishments, but cautioned that institutional interest in diversity does not trump academic achievement and intellectual curiosity.

Cindy Thienard-Pierre, the Magnet Lead Teacher at Miami Central Senior High School, commented that Mr. Gordon’s presentation gave her a few new ideas as well as she strives to see more talented public school students extend their educations at the nation’s leading academic institutions. She also commented that “getting the fit right” is key to matching a potential scholar with a college.
