Fishers, IN, December 22, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Peter Bonano, a young man from Los Angeles, was just beginning a career in banking, when Congress suddenly changed his life forever: In the fall of 1940, 18 months before Pearl Harbor, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. For the next four years, Bonano trained at bases all over the United States. In January 1944 he shipped out to England as part of General Patton’s Third Army Headquarters, where he became a trusted friend to Patton. He remained with Patton as the 3rd Army pushed the Nazis from western France to the eastern borders of Germany. Six days after the war ended, Patton, without advance notice, promoted Master Sergeant Peter Bonano to the rank of 2nd lieutenant, leading to one of the strangest experiences of his life.

No one in Bonano’s division knew anything about his new assignment, before or after its completion -- at least not for many years. The mission, to his surprise, was to make an inventory of a huge Nazi treasure consisting of huge quantities of gold, silver and bales of foreign currencies stashed in a forest in southern Bavaria under Patton’s control. Then, in a small armed convoy, he escorted the cache for three days on back roads until reaching, to his astonishment, a secluded castle near Heidelberg on the Neckar River, where he supervised the unloading. It was the last time that he saw or heard about the large Nazi treasure.

Documentary: Gen. George Patton Jr., 2nd Lt. Peter Bonano and A Vanishing Cache of Nazi Gold, published by Dog Ear Publishing, is a loving portrait of a brave, honest man serving his country. It also provides a unique picture of Patton from the view of an enlisted man. Documentary is a true labor of love on the part of Joseph Sprouse, a longtime friend of Peter Bonano and the recipient of much of Bonano’s firsthand information. His in-depth investigation of the events of 1945 make for a fascinating read. Sprouse served in the U.S. Marine Corps, and possesses a B.S. and a masters’ degree in physics, and worked as an aerospace research engineer at the Arnold Engineering Development Center in Tennessee. This is his first book.
