Shaleika Black – Shining Talent of the Edison Job Corps Academy

Story about a talented Edison Job Corps Academy student.

Edison, NJ, December 25, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Shaleika Black has just returned from the Boston Region Leadership Conference where she was among three other students representing the Edison Job Corps Academy. Shaleika did an outstanding job participating in interactive workshops and sharing her five year plan with eighty three participants representing twenty one other Job Corps centers. She also committed herself to implementing new student driven initiatives which will improve students’ overall success in the workplace.

Shaleika is one of the many success stories of the Job Corps program which started back in 1964 by the Economic Opportunity Act (EOA) and is the nation’s largest and oldest federally funded program for young adults ages 16-24. Edison Job Corps is proud to feature stories of successful students like Shaleika to encourage youth seeking quality vocational and academic programs emphasizing employability skills to pursue their dreams and educational goals.

Shaleika came to the Edison Job Corps Academy in April of 2010 and she accomplished a great deal within a relatively short amount of time. Not only did she complete an Office Administration program gaining five Microsoft Certifications as well as three others but she also completed three internships. Shaleika practiced her newly acquired knowledge assisting at the Edison Chamber of Commerce and at the Heldrich Hotel in New Brunswick in the Human Resources Department. Since October, Shaleika has been interning with BSM, a “business success management" firm as a Human Resources Administrator and has been recently offered a full time job in that capacity. While some people may forgo furthering their education once they secure an employment, Shaleika is determined to complete her studies at Edison Job Corps. She has set up a goal for herself to acquire an A+ certification in the next two months and complete the program at that time.

Shaleika spent four days in Worcester, MA in early December at the Boston Region Leadership Conference entitled “Career Pathways To Success” to learn about the importance of planning a career, setting up goals and ways of executing it. With this new knowledge she will become a better peer mentor on campus and an asset for her employer. Shaleika has many goals in the near future; including starting her Master Degree studies in September of 2011, owning real estate in 5 years and living a happy and content life while helping others. Edison Job Corps is very proud to have Shaleika as its student. She inspires others and leads by example seeking ways to be better at everything she does: “I always find room for improvement and strive for perfection in work and life.”

About Job Corps
2009 marked 45 years of Job Corps building the lives and launching the careers of nearly 3 million of America's youth. Job Corps, the largest and most successful academic and vocational training program for young adults ages 16-24, is the only employment and training program funded by Congress that has reached this milestone. To acknowledge this accomplishment the U.S. Congress passed a resolution this year declaring September 23 a “National Job Corps Day.” A major program objective is to ensure that students receive training in occupations that provide a quality wage and long-term employment. Therefore Edison Job Corps Academy, one of the 122 job corps centers nationwide, constantly increases employer input at all stages of training, and offer vocational programs that meet all industry standards.
