Genderplayful Marketplace Raises Startup Funds in Only Two Weeks

The Genderplayful Marketplace, a community-sponsored plan for a website that will let people sell clothing to one another, surpassed its fundraising goal of $5,000 over the holiday season. This project seeks to meet the needs of people who are unable to shop comfortably in traditional department stores, either due to body shape, gender presentation, or style preferences. Full project details are available at Genderplayful.tumblr.com.

San Francisco, CA, January 05, 2011 --(PR.com)-- All over the world, a growing number of people struggle with the expectations set by traditional gender roles. For many, shopping for clothes at conventional retail stores is uncomfortable, unsatisfying, or downright impossible. The Genderplayful Marketplace is a community-sponsored plan for an online vending space that will meet the clothing needs of gender-variant people. Founder and technologist Sarah Dopp committed to making the marketplace a reality if she could raise $5,000 in one month. Community supporters raised it in two weeks.

The Genderplayful Marketplace celebrates diversity in gender presentation and body type. Emphasizing custom solutions in all shapes and sizes for unisex, masculine, feminine, and gender-nonconforming clothing, it will host a large community that finds and creates those solutions together. Vendors will include everyone from independent designers to people re-selling items from local thrift stores and their own closets. Community members will interact and collaborate on what they’re excited about, and vendors will have opportunities to meet unique, individual requests. Clothing styles will range from the conservative and traditional to the fun and obscure.

The community fundraiser will continue until the original deadline of January 15, 2011. Any funds raised in excess of $5,000 will go toward site feature improvements, staffing resources, and helping to speed completion of such a massive project.

The project is also collecting and sharing letters of support from community members. One contributor commented with her donation, “This is in honor of my wonderful and talented transgender daughter who requested support for this new enterprise as a holiday gift.” Another wrote, “To receive such hope so early on in my journey is the best Christmas present I could have ever asked for."

Information about the project and fundraiser, along with many letters of support from community members, are available at: Genderplayful.tumblr.com.

Sarah Dopp is also the founder of Genderfork.com, a supportive community for the expression of identities across the gender spectrum. This site receives over 20,000 readers per month and showcases community-generated photos, quotes, and discussions about gender non-conformity.
