Born in Idaho, Michael Sweeley lived on the Upper West Side of Manhattan for approximately fifty years after attending Juilliard. He was a lifelong devotee of the arts and music. Following employment with Sol Hurok, Sweeley first got involved with Caramoor in 1955, eventually becoming the Executive Director, a position he held for more than thirty years. Mr. Sweeley implemented founder Lucie Bigelow Rosen’s dream of seeing her country house and gardens opened to the public and evolve into a world renowned center for music and the arts, replete with educational programs and a fully developed summer concert series. This auction has a large number of items from his estate. Other highlights include two works by the noted artist Robert R. Bliss, (American, 1925-1981), Athlete’s Back and Torso. A Contemporary Crystal Sculpture, inscribed Christopher Ries, dated 7.8.99 displays the artist’s fascination with mathematics and geometry. Further are a Louis XV Style Twenty-Light Chandelier, Baroque Carved Walnut Fall-Front Secretaire, Italian, a Venetian Etched Glass Looking Glass and a monumental Renaissance Revival Carved Walnut Mirrored Sideboard, American are being sold in the Nye auction. A New Jersey family consigned a nice collection of European porcelain, which includes figurals, hollowware and a pair of monumental hand- painted chargers decorated with young maidens. This collection represents such notable firms as Meissen, Sevres, Rosenthal and more. Nye & Company relocated to Montclair and Bloomfield, New Jersey making them more easily accessible from New York City. John and Kathleen Nye acquired Dawson’s after his long and fruitful Sothebys career.
