U.S. Government Hospitals Receive FSS-Purchase Access to Mednovus SAFESCAN Products for MRI Safety

Mednovus, Inc., manufacturer of the SAFESCAN family of ferromagnetic detection systems for screening of persons and equipment before entering MRI rooms, has just been awarded a five-year government contract to supply accreditation-required MRI safety equipment.

Leucadia, CA, January 26, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Effective in December of 2010, Mednovus SAFESCAN was awarded Federal Supply Schedule (FSS) contract, contract number V797P-3222M, to provide ferromagnetic detection systems to federal government radiology providers to enhance MRI safety.

Under this contract, federal imaging providers, such as the US Department of Veterans Affairs, may purchase SAFESCAN ferromagnetic detectors through a pre-negotiated, five-year agreement. For government purchasers, FSS contracts dramatically simplify the acquisition process.

Included in the pricing agreement are the SAFESCAN Intercept Pillar, a variable aperture walk-through screening tool, and the SAFESCAN Target Scanner, a hand-held detector. Both are intended to help find magnetic materials on patients and caregivers before the objects are brought into the room with an MRI scanner, where the magnetic materials could become lethal magnetic homing-missiles.

"Dr. Emanuel Kanal, an international authority on MRI safety, has characterized magnetic projectiles as 'public enemy number-one' for MR," stated Kemp Massengill, CEO of Mednovus SAFESCAN. "We are thrilled that this FSS contract makes it easier for our VA and [Department of Defense] clients to get the products that will help them protect their MRI patients, staff, and millions of dollars of equipment."

"And the timing is serendipitous for these clients, too," offered Tobias Gilk, the company's president. "In January, the Joint Commission began requiring ferromagnetic detection systems through their referenced building code. That probably means that nearly all new MRI's will have to have these products... if they want to comply with accreditation requirements."

"We're thrilled that the SAFESCAN products are not only the most cost-effective, but also now among the easiest to get within the US government," Gilk continued.

The contract, which is currently in effect, extends until nearly the end of 2015.
