Media opportunity: Wednesday February 9, 10am: The Roundhouse, Derby College, Pride Park, Derby.

Derby, United Kingdom, January 27, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Opportunities to interview BLOODHOUND SSC driver Wing Commander Andy Green, experience the driving simulator and interview College students about their views on the project.

Derby College is celebrating National Apprenticeship Week. (February 7-11) with a visit from the UK's latest World Land Speed Record attempt.

The full-size BLOODHOUND SSC (Super Sonic Car) show car will make its first visit to the East Midlands and take centre stage in The Roundhouse as part of the week.

School pupils, Derby College students, local businesses and the general public will have the opportunity to meet the Bloodhound SSC team, try the Bloodhound Driving Experience and find out more about the project.

Derbyshire Education Business Partnership have arranged for nearly 150 local school children to visit the exhibition on Tuesday February 8 as part of the STEM initiative to inspire them in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. As well as learning more about the car itself and the World Land Speed Record, they will also take part in a challenge to make and race miniature kit cars using balloon power.

This will be followed by an Apprenticeship Information Evening on Tuesday February 8 between 5pm and 7:30pm. Young people and parents can speak to Connexions Derbyshire for help searching though the latest vacancies and get support with their applications. For those who have already applied for an Apprenticeship through the College it’s a chance to meet and discuss their future with College staff and learn more about the BLOODHOUND project.

On Wednesday February 9, local businesses will be invited to a breakfast meeting where they will meet Wing Commander Andy Green, an RAF fighter pilot and current holder of the World Land Speed Record who will attempt to break the record again in BLOODHOUND SSC.

Students from across the College will visit the exhibition throughout the day on Wednesday before it is open to the general public between 5pm and 7pm.

Derby College Principal David Croll explained: “It is very appropriate that the BLOODHOUND SSC full-size show car will make its first visit to the East Midlands and be installed in The Roundhouse which was at the heart of railway engineering and innovation in the 19th century.

“The ‘Accelerate Your Success’ programme of events at Derby College will ensure that everyone from school pupils to the business community will have the chance to learn more about this amazing project.

“And for our students and particularly the apprentices who will be coming to College to find out more about the future opportunities, it will showcase the wide range of skills that have been involved in building this incredible car and hopefully illustrate to them that they can achieve anything that they put their minds to.”

The BLOODHOUND Project is sponsored by Nottingham-based, Protocol National, the largest provider of outsourced recruitment solutions to the FE Sector.

Protocol National Business Development Manager David Beynon said: “The BLOODHOUND SSC show car has been greeted with amazement and excitement wherever it has visited.

“We are delighted that it will form the basis of National Apprenticeship Week celebrations at Derby College to engage learners and inspire a generation to pursue the STEM subjects of science, technology, engineering and mathematics on its first visit to the East Midlands region.”

The public open evening will be held on Wednesday February 9 between 5pm and 7pm at The Roundhouse, Pride Park DE24 8JE. The free exhibition is open to everyone but places need to be booked for the presentation about the initiative online: www.derby-college.ac.uk/apprenticeship-week
