Change My Style: App Finds Suitable Tie for a Man’s Suit

Change My Style is a helpful dress guide for men and woman. The app can display a photo of a person with clothing of different colors and guide the user in choosing an appropriate color combination. The actual highlight is a novel algorithm that can generate matching combinations. This makes it very easy to find the appropriate tie for a man’s suit.

Berlin, Germany, February 11, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Every man has experienced this situation. Every morning he is standing in front of his closet and is asking himself what to wear today. Does the blue tie fit better the white or the yellow shirt? Should I take the gray tie for the job interview or does it look too conservative?

“Change My Style“ is able to answer these questions. The app uses a novel algorithm which delivers solutions for matching color combinations. Having a specific suit color selected, the app can find all suitable tie colors. As an alternative the user can try to achieve a specific impact. For example, if he wants to look smart, the app delivers the associated color combination. The results are immediately displayed in the photo. The app contains a photo of a man and a woman as well.

The developer Dr. Alexander Rieger says: "Good taste is not a matter of taste. Which colors match well together can be calculated mathematically. While nearly all women know by intuition which colors match, they still cannot explain why. And for us men even the intuition is sometimes missing. With the app the user finally has a mobile color guide at hand delivering matching combinations for the closet at home or when shopping in a store."

The app starts with a photo of a person and three colors buttons. The user simply clicks on a color button to change the color of the clothes. A color palette appears where the user can select a new color. The result is shown immediately in the photo. On the left of the screen are four smileys that evaluate the user’s choice. These color choices are optimal only when all smileys are smiling. By clicking on an unsatisfied smiley the user gets a message how to optimize the color combination. The top of the screen displays a text showing what most people associate with the color combination (e.g. intelligent). Whenever the user changes his colors the smileys and the association can change as well. With this method the user can try out different combinations and check the evaluated results.

Having selected a color combination with poor matching it is then possible to generate matching combinations by the app. The app tries to change as less clothes as possible. The number of solutions found can reach from a few up to more than a hundred, depending on the original color combination. Sometimes it is enough to change only the tie. In other cases two pieces of clothes must be changed. The user must decide which colors he wants to keep before the results are presented. The more he wants to keep the less solutions will remain. Then, the solutions are applied to the photo, including the association people have to it. The user can simply browse through the solutions until he finds a color combination he has in his closet.

An alternative, other than to begin with a color combination, is to start with a specific association (e.g. intelligent). The app contains a list of more than 100 associations and the corresponding color combinations. When the user selects an association the colors are applied to the photo. Often it can happen that the colors of a selected association do not match well (therefore the association is very strong). The user can try to optimize the colors but must be careful not to loose the association. A helpful tip is to stay in one color row when changing colors in the color palette.

The app contains a photo of a man and a woman as well. While the user can select the colors of the tie, shirt and suit for the man, the female person is allowed to choose colors for shirt, pants and jacket.
