SMEs Failing to Control Websites Costs - According to Research Carried Out by OnePoll, on Behalf of BaseKit

28 per cent of SMEs admitted that their company website costs them at least a thousand pounds a year, while one in five business owners had no idea of their average yearly spend. In addition, a third of respondents believed that to create a website was complicated and scary.

London, United Kingdom, February 12, 2011 --(PR.com)-- UK Small and medium enterprises are failing to effectively manage the basic cost to the business of maintaining and hosting their websites, according to research carried out by OnePoll, on behalf of BaseKit.

28 per cent of SMEs admitted that their company website costs them at least a thousand pounds a year, while one in five business owners had no idea of their average yearly spend. In addition, a third of respondents believed that to create a website was complicated and scary.

"This research demonstrates that businesses believe they need significant investment to create and maintain a website, and this could not be further from the truth," comments Chris Winstanley, Head of Marketing at BaseKit.

Winstanley continues: "Five years ago, web designers held a considerable advantage over businesses in terms of knowledge and skills, and they consequently capitalised on this by applying hefty price tags for their services. Today there are tools available that allow businesses to create, publish, host and manage their own websites in-house from as little as GBP50 a year, at least 80 per cent less than the cost of employing a web designer."

Of the respondents who admitted to spending over a thousand pounds a year, male CEOs (32 per cent) and those aged between 45-54 years old (38 per cent) were the most frivolous.

"Gone are the days when you had to hire expensive specialists to create a website. Today a fantastic looking business website is within the budget and technical grasp of the masses," concludes Winstanley.

The OnePoll survey was carried out between 4th and 10th January 2011, and surveyed 577 UK SMEs.
