Adelphi University to Provide Full Scholarship to Winner of NY Knicks Poetry Competition

Garden City, NY, February 25, 2011 --(PR.com)-- In support of a creativity and education initiative by the New York Knicks, Adelphi University is offering a full four-year scholarship to one of the winners of the Knicks Poetry Slam written competition, which finished receiving entries in January. The program aims to provide greater opportunities for high school students to use their poetic skills and talents to pursue higher education. The winner, who must be a current high school senior entering college in the fall of this year, will be chosen by a panel of judges based on a portfolio of work, including an essay, original poems, community service experience, and a resume.

The Knicks will hold an awards ceremony for the winners of the competition before their March 4 game against the Cleveland Cavaliers at Madison Square Garden. Adelphi Senior Vice President and Treasurer Timothy P. Burton will make a center court appearance at the game to honor the scholarship recipient.

Since 2003, the Knicks Poetry Slam has served over 20,000 students annually with high school visits, workshops, a college fair, and multimedia poetry competitions. The program, which is in partnership with Urban Word NYC, will present more than $450,000 in college grants and prizes in 2010-2011. This is the first year that Adelphi is sponsoring the competition.
