Now Live on iGavelAuctions.com: Margaret Mitchell Scrapbook Featured in iGavel Online Auction

iGavel Auctions associate seller Everard and Company’s auction is now live through March 24th on www.igavelauctions.com.

New York, NY, March 11, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Headlining the auction is a scrapbook that was compiled by Axel Mathiesen who was the illustrator for the Danish version of ‘ Gone With the Wind’. Between the years 1937 and 1939 Margaret Mitchell and Mr. Mathiesen developed a friendship and corresponded several times.

The scrapbook contains 7 signed Margaret Mitchell letters with Mathiesen's corresponding letters dating from 1937- 39. There are also press clippings from that time as well as four of Mr. Mathiesen's original illustrations and a copy of the Danish version of Gone With the Wind dated 1945. The estimate on this lot is $20,000-30,000. Margaret Mitchell’s letters praised Mathiesen for capturing the essence of her characters even though he had never been to America himself. Mitchell also wrote about how she sent his illustrations to David Selznick to give him ideas for costuming for the movie. Some of the letters are written right before the movie came out and discuss how she does not know who will play the main characters. They are a fascinating look at Margaret Mitchell, she even sent Mr. Mathiesen Confederate bills that had been in her family and pasted the poem ‘Lines on the Back of a Confederate Note’ to the back of each bill and signed them. She states in one of the letters that ‘Will Benteen reads it to Scarlett and Melanie on the porch at Tara the day Ashley returns from the War’. Other auction highlights include a wonderful bronze by Eutrope Bouret with marble pedestal, clocks, Russian icons, pair of Lalique swans, Asian Art including a six panel cloisonne screen, Minton majolica garden seat by George Jones and many interesting group lots.
