AIGA Miami Invites Rick Valicenti

Miami, FL, February 21, 2007 --( AIGA Miami is hosting a lecture by Award winning designer Rick Valicenti, Principal and founder of Thirst/3st out of Chicago, at the DASH Gallery on Thursday February 22, 2007.

Founder/Design Director of Thirst in 1981 and Thirstype in 1993. Rick Valicenti's has been recognized for the passion and intelligence of his influential prolific body of work, his passion for design and embracing of new technologies make for a dynamic marriage of imagery and inspiration. Thirst's creative versatility continues to lead the discourse and pursue the elusive ideals of intelligence and real human presence within today's world of commerce.

Valicenti provides inspiration to his colleagues and mentorship to a generation of students. One piece of his reads, "I often wonder if I’ll have anything profound to say," but to those who look, it's clear that he already has.

Rick Valicenti has a BFA from Bowling Green State University, and an MA and MFA in Photography from the University of Iowa. He has juried countless design awards, including the President's Design Awards, National Endowment for the Arts. His work is included in the permanent collection of The Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum; has been featured, critiqued and lauded in design publications worldwide; and has garnered awards from AR100, Graphis, CA, Print, Step, New York Art Directors Club, ACD100, Tokyo Art Directors and ID Magazine, among others. He has lectured extensively and exhibited his work around the world. He is a member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI), has served as President of the Society of Typographic Art and was awarded the AIGA Chicago Fellows Award in 2004 for his steadfast commitment to the education of design’s future generations.

Emotion as Promotion: A book of Thirst is a contemporary commentary on the state of contemporary communication design as evidenced in the professional practice from both Rick's public and personal realms. The first book is an exuberant manifesto and a brutally honest heart-to-heart chat with the next generation of graphic designers. The Thirst insights are shared with humor and candor as Rick tries to make sense of (making a) living through design.
