“Johnson County for Obama” to have Kickoff Meeting

“Johnson County for Obama” to have Kickoff Meeting, Iowa City Mayor, Ross Wilburn Says "Count Me In!"

Iowa City, IA, February 23, 2007 --(PR.com)-- On February 6, Seth Tobey, a UI Law Student and the National Grassroots Organizer of Draft Obama, the nation’s leading Obama grassroots organization, attended a local meetup to gauge local interest for Senator Barack Obama’s (D-IL) presidential candidacy. A dozen people came.

Hours after Obama officially announced his candidacy for President on February 10, Tobey realized the potential of the small, but growing group of supporters in Johnson County. He posted the upcoming March meeting on the new campaign site, http://my.barackobama.com, and the response was overwhelming. “Over 120 people have already RSVPed”, said Tobey.

He added, “I’m thrilled by the response we’ve received…this just goes to show how successful and important grassroots organizations can be.” This is also a big success for the Senator’s new website. “It is truly giving the opportunity for everyday citizens to get involved and make a difference.” Tobey said he planned the meeting to attract the campaign’s attention. “I wanted to send a clear message to Senator Obama and his campaign staff that his supporters in Johnson County are ready to get to work and are looking forward to a visit from him.”

Ross Wilburn, Mayor of Iowa City, has agreed to be the evening’s keynote speaker. “I support Senator Obama because of his views on education, healthcare and his ability to discuss faith in an inclusive way. I'm impressed by his state and national experience in reaching across the aisle to bring divergent views into consensus action,” said Wilburn.

“Having the mayor come to speak at our event is just incredible,” Tobey said. He concluded by saying, “I invite everyone to come to our event to learn how they can get help make Senator Obama the next President of the United States.”

The evening will also feature a performance by Colleen Jameson, a local acoustic guitar artist, and a letter writing campaign in support of Senator Obama’s Iraq War De-escalation Act of 2007.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a $5 donation to help cover the costs of the event.
